have a look at a piece of software called avi2dvd, it will aLLOW you to add subtitles to your project.

Have also asked the mods to move this question to the subtitle area for more exposure

software description:
Avi2DVD is a GUI in order to convert with just few clicks an AVI/OGM/MKV/DVD to DVD/SVCD/VCD. Avi2dvd uses only freeware tools and can handle varius freeware enconders (QuEnc/FreeEnc/NuEnc) or CCE. Software supports 1 videostream, 1 audiostream and 3 subtitle streams (in a dvd mode).
