Using the same display capable of 1080i:
HD-DVD disc played on an HD-DVD player = 1080i
Regular DVD played on an HD-DVD player upconverted = 1080i
Regular DVD played on the 360 = 480p

There's a few things that I'm curious about:
- Will the HD-DVD player work on a Japanese system?
- If it does, will the HD-DVD player have a region code system of its own or will it go off of your 360's region code system?
- And finally, will the HD-DVD player itself be able to play regular DVDs?

larry55,
-It should, but the drive it self may have a region lock.
-see above. but we'll have to wait till it's released to find out for sure.
-uhm, since it's a HD-DVD Drive addon, it's not really a player, and doubtfull it will function as a standalone unit, if it doesn't use the regular dvd drive in the 360. - or buy a $29.99 Apex to watch ur regular dvd's on.

Why didn't they incorperate HD-DVD in the first place? Could it have been money loss or a marketing technique?

My guess is that they wanted to rush the Xbox 360 out before Christmas, incorporating the HD-DVD player into the unit would have caused delays like the PS3.

plus the launch price point would then jump to match that of the ps3, well you don't need the HD-DVD for games anyway, it's strictly for movie viewing, so it's something on a gaming console you can leave out if it's not needed, besides how many of you are going to go out and buy HD-DVD's or BR-DVD's? hello betamax/vhs all over a gain. or laserdisc/dvd
