Hi,

I am hoping someone could advise me on this. I frequently receive guests at my house, however, I do not wish them to have actual access to the DVDs itself. I wish to rip the DVDs and play them back thru a device, hopefully one with a simple user interface, something similar to the Pinnacle Showcentre n so on.

How should I go about doing it? Which softwares should I use?

Can someone help pls.

There is no one program that will give you ease of use, versatility and updates to keep up with new encryptions. Currently there are 3 freeware apps that you can use to backup 99% of all movies on the market today.

DVDFab Decrypter...rips to HDD. http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

DVD Shrink...compresses to fit on a single layer disc. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

Imgburn...burn the files created with DVD Shrink. http://www.imgburn.com

VobBlanker...rarely needed, but is sometimes a must to correct the structure of the DVD if the copy protection has corrupted it. http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

All are free and relatively simple to use.

Here is a guide for using all of them together: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

WHat if I do not wish to put these backups on a disc but wish to leave them on the hdd? what format can i leave them in?

Ive played around with DivX, unfortunately version 5 does not support subtitles with Dr DivX while v6 does, most hardware players cannot support it, what other formats can I use?

Thanks!

You can simply create an ISO image with DVD Shrink whick will leave a file of only 4.3 gigs, instead of your original 5-8 gigs. Play with Nero's image drive or Daemon Tools.

Thanks for all the advice so far. :)

However, following such steps, i would have to use a computer to play the video back? Or should I use a MCE machine? I would be playing it back thru a projector.

Hello!

What i do is rip dvd's with DVDdecrypter and encode them via autoGK 2.27 into XviD avi's at 75% original quality.
I have the pinnacle showcenter so i can play music, videos and fotos from my computer on my TV.
Pinnacle got nice media software to collect all my files so i can play them at my TV with a special ir-remote.
The showcenter device is connected via my network hub with the computer. The showcenter is then connected to the TV with scart and to the stereo with the stereo-cabel.
The above setup works VERY good, but some DVD's cant be ripped because of some structure protection.
DVDfab-decrypter can bypass that but it cannot synchronise the movie and sound files in autoGK 2.27 correctly, which DVD Decrypter can (although cant rip structure protected DVD's like Chronicles of Narnia and The Exorcism of Emily Rose).

Havent found a solution to bypass the structure protection.
There is a way in autoGK to synchronize audio and video but its a pain in the....

Anyway for most of the time DVD Decrypter and autoGK works best for me and with 75% of original DVD quality XviD-AVI you wont see a difference!
