Inside the casing is a simple Sata laptop drive. Realistically, it should be fairly simple once the formatting issue is cracked (I give it another two months, tops.)
Because the hard drives can be swapped out, that indicates to me that they are not coded to specific units, like the original XBox(My my what a pain that was). Because it isn't system-coded, it seems that there should be one universal format and/or lock code that works with all of them. Therefore once it's figured out by one person, it should be quick for the rest. Particularly considering the nature with all the USB connectivity; I am suspecting that when they figure out how to correctly format bigger sata drives, they'll also be able to hook them up through the USB ports. And I really don't think M$ will be all that well able to tell. Looking at the direction future games and software are taking, all signs point to a bigger hard drive option in the works from them as it is. So they would only be able to police this so well.
So realistically, once it's cracked, it should be a very simple tut. Or at least a lot simpler than the original. Again, being well informed of the scene from launch day (I nabbed one at midnight on launch at a Gamestop, WITHOUT any kind of pre-order or reserve. How lucky is that?). Realistically, the first few cracks have happened. There is a legitimate, but difficult firmware hack available for the DVD-rom drive(Only certain ones) which is doable for most. I personally still have an older rig with no Sata features, so I haven't tested it, plus I love XBox Live, and I'm a paranoid little bugger about being caught... So yeah.
I would check back into the scene in about 60 days or so, to see if the HDD crack/mod is public yet. I'm sure one is coming soon. It's easier this time around, although turthfully, I think people are much more interested in making an easier firmware hack right now, so that may take priority and delay the progress of HDD swapping, but you hopefully get the idea. And hopefully my rambling didn't go on too long.
