I take short movies with my Canon digital camera. The output is an AVI file that contains compressed video (mpeg1? mpeg2? ??).

I can reduce the file size by about one third using Windows Media Encoder to produce a Windows Media Video (wmv), and still maintain the 640x480 format I like. The quality is also excellent. This makes them a reasonable size for uploading to my web pages so I can share them with friends.

The one problem I have is that friends with a Macintosh computer can not view these files.

My question then ... Is there another way to get the same re-encoding/compression/format results - and the smaller file size - but creating a file readable on Macs?

I have Nero (Vision Express), Virtual Dub, and Windows Media Encoder, but when I try to make mpeg1 or mpeg2 files they are much bigger (file size) or the only choice is to reduce the format size (e.g., to 320 x 240 ?).

Is there a free and simple tool that can achieve the same format/file size results that I get with Windows Media Encoder, but creating a format readable on Macs?

Thanks in Advance (I hope I posted this in the right place).

Chuck

Virtualdub.
Open the file.
Select Video, compression, and choose one from the list.
Experiment with XviD, DivX, mp4 (low motion), whatever.
If your friend has the codec, he'll be able to watch them.
Your other option is to use quicktime pro, and make them into .mov

Black holes are where God divided by zero...
Cheers, Jim
