Of all the things to call the new Nintendo system, why did they choose Wii? Does anyone have an information on the origin of this name? and if not. Just make something up because frankly im clueless

they gave it that name because according to them it is a japanese meaning of "good" (I think) and because it is something everyone regardless what country can remember and no need to abbreviate because it just Wii...
P.S. I hate the name so much but who cares as long as it does not interfere with the system and by the way when I talk to my friends, I refer to it as the revolution...(they should have sticked to that name)
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...
My Comp: (will add specs later)

I refer to it as "the new nintendo" whenever I am talking to people about it. I just can't say Wii, it is soooo gay sounding

Why does nintendo rely on their ingenuity and creativity instead of a more orthodox approach. Though I love the first party games they produce, I cant help but see nintendo's decline over the past five years in the "desktop" console war (handheld they still reign supreme)

Quote: Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
- wii.nintendo.com
an explanation from nintendo on april the day it came out:
Quote: Introducing... Wii. As in "we." While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii. Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd. So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.
personally, I think they could've thought of a better name than that, but I don't care that much anymore. I never really did in the first place. It's just a name.

I personally think they shouda went with Nintendo Revolution rather than Wii. But w/e, still the same console at the end of it all so it'll be worth the name change.

"revolution" was actually its code name not its real name (kind of like when xbox 360 was in development and reffered to as "xinon").
I dont know about you guys, but I cant wait to play with my wii! ....(wait a sec, that didnt sound right at all)
Peace Out!
P.S.=yup, even though revolution was a codename they should of just gone along with it.

They couldnt use revolution, because what would they call there next console? The next revolution or, revolution360 or, revolution2 or, super revolution. If they kept the name, witch rocked, there next console would have lost the glammer of the name and where do you go from a revolution?

I think it wasn't very revolutionary. The controller and some other features are great but the specs won't compair to the other two so I think that's why they dropped the name.
I for one don't mind.I will still want one I could care less about the name.
