counter strike source problems.

hello, whenever i connect a server in counter strike source i get kicked by the console saying " your ping is too high" what does that means? and what is latency? i am new to this online playing.. please can anyone help?

a ping is when your computer sends out a packet to another computer, and then waits to get a returned packet. basically the lower ping the better.

i am using a dsl of 256 kbps .. i get a ping around 300 to 500 .. how do i make it less like others.. i see 10 to 90 for others .. plz help me, i just got the game and i m being kicked by the server.

if your on cable, then i would think your ping would be low due to the fast connection, unless your connecting to a server on the otherside planet, and the ping would be higher.

basically what everyone is saying is that you want to play on a server that has the lowest ping possible. Some servers have a limit on the ping that lets the server deny you of playing on it if you have a higher ping because it will slow down the whole server.

Also, ping is the same thing as latency

alright my ping/latency is very high to others and i guess its slow.. in steam when i click on tools, i see 'source dedicated server' if i install it will it help ( makes my latency lower) ?

no the dedicated server will only let you host a game for others to play on. There is no way you can lower your ping other than get a faster connection, but that may not be an option for you. Just go to the server browser in CounterStrike and find a server with some people playing and has a LOW ping/latency..
