My wireless adapter in not working

I bought a wireless adapter, and set up everything and it said i was connected, but i still am not receving any packets and i can't egt connected to the internet. I'm i missing something, is there something i need, do i new internet sevice, ( i thought it was wireless)? I need help!!!!

You may have to manually enter the IP address, DNS info and the rest. You can get info that off your PC by hitting the start button in XP, then go to run. TYPE CMD. When the prompt pops up type ipconfig/all. Make the last digital of the IP address 1 greater than your PC. They can't have the same address.
