Difference between 'SAO' and 'DAO'

Hello All.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the difference was between the SAO and DAO write types in either Imgburn or DVD Decrypter? I did some searching, but couldn't find anything. I even searched the Imgburn website, but thought I'd ask here... since there are quite a few experts here that have helped out before.

I ask because I've finally been able to burn Dual-Layer DVDs using the ISO rip w/ Decypter, ISO burn, booktype to DVD-ROM, write speed 2.4x... and so on. I was getting all kinds of problems from lead-in errors, to write address failures, to sector errors and it seems that the latest FW for my external Sony 810UL (2.0e) has fixed the problem. However, when I tried the latest version of Imgburn (1.3.0.0) the other night, and got a 'operation completed successfully', I was unable to play the back-up in my standalone players. They both said 'cannot play disc'.

So, getting to the point here... I thought I'd try the exact same thing, but with DVD Decypter 3.5.4.0 (ISO write, etc.) and ALL is fine! The discs play great with no problems. This is where my question comes in... from looking at the logs (see below), the only thing different (that I can see), is the write type for the failed disc was set to 'DAO' (in Imgburn) and the ones that work fine the write type was 'SAO' (in DVD Decrypter). I didn't change anything after loading the new version of Imgburn either.

Another thing that was odd, was Physical Format Info. after the 'failed' burn completed in Imgburn. It said there was only 1 layer burned, and used PTP (parallel track path). I would think this had something to do with the disc not playing in the standalone...

I guess it doesn't really matter, but if I were to change the write type in Imgburn to 'SAO', my back-ups should then be ok... correct??? I'll probably try it anyways, just for my own mental well-being. :)

Here's what I found:

DAO - Disk at Once

Disc At Once recording for DVD-R media is a mode in which all data is written sequentially to the disc in one uninterrupted recording session. The on-disk contents result in a lead-in area, followed by the data, and closed by a lead-out area. The data is addressable in sectors of 2048 bytes each, with the first sector address being zero. There are no run-out blocks as in CD-R disc-at-once.

SAO - Session at Once

Session at once is a relatively new capability used on some CD Extra discs. With SAO, an audio session is written without intertrack gaps, just as though it were DAO. The difference is that only the session is closed, so one or more additional sessions can be written. Since an audio player can only see the first session of a disc, it makes no sense to write audio after SAO (unless you want to play the disc only on your computer).

Very interesting. Didn't even think of 'disc at once' and 'session at once'... thanks Waynekusa.

Anyone have any info. relating to Imgburn and DVD Decypter? Anyone else experiment with changing this in the 'settings' tab?

SAO and DAO are the same thing really. I just changed the name between DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn because DAO fits in with what the MMC specs say.

The SAO name is more for CD's than DVD's.

I didn't have a chance to try burning a +R DL with Imgburn (write type set to 'SAO'), but do you guys think that's what my problem was??? That was the only thing that I noticed was different in the 2 logs that I posted. Just looking to verify that...

I did, however, burn another ISO using Decrypter (using SAO) and I'm happy to say that I am now 3 for 3! I only went through about 8 or 10 DLs over the past 2 or 3 months trying to get this to work, but oh well... live and learn.

Hey, at least an explanation was given as to what DAO and SAO were... thanks again!
