My pc crashed, can't boot up. When I try I get:

Windows couldn't start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe

Is this a spyware virus? How do I reinstall this missing or corrupt file? I'm running Windows xp Home Edition

I seen registry file fix it software online but I can't afford to purchase this stuff for the fear that it may not work.
I was told by a friend to boot up in safe mode...not sure how or if that is what I need to do. Help!I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks so much!

here is some info on what the file is:
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/nt...

it is a core section of the Windows Operating System, in your situation, i dont think a registry editor will make the cut, you will most likely need to boot up with a linux distro or something and replace it manually
or go through and do a system restore.

just some ideas.

Pnut2005:
This is more than likely not a Malware problem. You may also have some other issues. You will need your WinXp cd.Have recently installed any new hardware ( especially hd's)? If so boot the machine and tap the F8 key, Select last known good config. If that does the trick ignore the below.

To restore this file follow the below steps. If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this and you have no other issues.

Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
Type exit to reboot the computer.
