VirtualDub creates excessively large avi file

I followed the directions on this site for using VirtualDub to join Avi files. The crucial point to avoid a file larger than the total originals, was to make sure you have direct stream copy set in Video and Audio which I did. BUT....it took 2 avi files that were about 15MB each and created a monster of 185MB. These were DivX type avi files that required DX50 codec which I have. Can someone help me with this please?
