Well you first need to download the actual emulator (project64 is pretty good) then you need the roms aka games, you don't need a n64 controller but if you pick not to use one then you have to use the keyboard (which can be annoying) and yes you would have to connect the n64 pad up via some sort of adaptor.

That's pretty odd I've not had any problems with P64 or DK64, can you try a different rom or emulator?

Late responce but eh,

You need to have the controller hooked before launching the emu and you need to go into settings or input and select your gamepad and change it from keyboard to your controller.

Ive never heard of a PSP used as a controller but any USB controller should work with P64. I use my dual action for it. You just go to the options and map the N64 buttons to controller buttons. Excellent controller.

X2 3800, A8n deluxe motherboard, 7800GT, Xion 2 case
2GB Patriot DDR 400, Audigy 2 ZS gamer, 400GB SATA RAID 0
games Im looking forward to: bioshock, SSBB, enemy territory quake wars, halo 3
currently playing: command and conquer 3, supreme commander, counter strike, shivering isles

The gravis gamepad pro will work well too, I have that, then I got the XBOX 360 controller for windows (or in other words, a standard 360 WIRED controller, looks and feels great and works well for almost anything.

As for the initial questions, shouldn't a readme that comes with the emulator explain the answers?

I cover my bases...
1)Xbox w/xecuter 2.6 solderless
2)Ps2 (slim) w/DMS4 Lite
3)Ps2 V7 w/DMS4 Lite and 200 Gig Maxtor HDD
4)GC w/qoob pro
