Been using this the last couple of days and am quite pleased with it. It combines Ask Jeeves, Google, Yahoo, MSN, Question is if anybody knows of any downfalls with it. Chris

Dogpile's circa 1997 bud, lol.

It's got its uses though. I bounce between a couple depending on what I'm looking for, but the logic behind google's system is...well...the reason why google's taking over the world.

@ TomMelee Sorry to ask a question to make you laugh out loud. With a response you gave for an answer was not called for the purpose of this forum is to help and not berate a question you consider foolish. Not everyone has the knowledge of the net as you do. Have a nice day. Chris

Ok, well, that REALLY made me lol, but not until after I fired up my roflcopter and laced up my lollerskates.

The problem with this interweb is that you can't ever tell someone's tone of voice, or that some people are way more prone to take things as sarcasm, or whatnot.

I wasn't trying to belittle you, and I call everyone "bud." I work with children, I guess it rubs off.

Now, to further address your point.
You asked if there are any downfalls to a search engine, particularly one which doesn't use its own spiders but merely combines the results of several.

Search engines use "spiders" to "crawl" across the web, indexing pages. There was a time when AltaVista had the best one, and everyone set their search-engine optimization for AltaVista's spider. Then Yahoo came along and showed the world what a search engine could do. Somewhere along in there, Ask Jeeves decided to do the same thing, but to allow you to ask questions. Basically, it's coded to ignore the "how do I" "what is a" "when was the" and search for the true context of your query, for which it returns results. Then, google came around. To this day, the actual sourcecode of the google spider system is known only to a few people anywhere in the world, but it's unfriggin believeable. Not only do the spiders *learn*, but so does the results generator. Everytime you spell something wrong and then choose "did you mean...", it learns. Everytime you search for X word and click a page w/ "Y" context, it learns the associations. It's really quite unsane, and its ability to deliver targeted ads is one of the big reasons they're so rich.

Now, dogpile. Downfalls? Same as any other search engine, plus the fact that it doesn't spider in and of itself. It's sorta like walmart. They'll have what you need, but it might not be on the shelf in the right place, or it might be made in Kerblackastan instead of Alabama. Also, because each search engine has its own command line switches you can throw in "Filetype:" in google comes to mind, or "peants Site:www.afterdawn.com", for example, you can't do these kinds of advanced searches with any real, honest, success.

There, I hope you don't think I'm pompus now, even though I am sometimes.

Yet, I also enjoy using this great search engine:
http://a9.com/AfterDawn.com

NOTE: This search engine is my second favorite after
google. The best feature of A9 Search is:
You can hover your cursor on the word SITE for each listing
( a menu pops up telling you the RANK and other info
for that website ). This feature is a big help !!
Hope all you AfterDawn.com members will enjoy A9 Search too !!

Best thing about DOGPILE SEARCH is the limited number of
listings. Even though the listings don't go on-and-on forever
they are pretty precise.

Yet, I also enjoy using this search engine:

NOTE: The most interesting feature on A9 Search is
hovering your cursor on the word SITE for each listing
( a menu pops up giving you additional info on that website ).
Pretty cool I think !!
