PS2 no longer reads PS1 backups

I have an old PS2 with an old modchip in it (Was installed in october 2001). I don't know the name of the chip, but it only reads burned ps1 cds (apparently it can read burned ps2 games with a gameshark, never tried before). It always used to read my back ups fine, but now it will do one of three things when I try to run one: It will say its an audio cd, it will give me a disk error, or it will boot up and freeze on the PS1 screen that all games have in the beginning. It plays the originals fine. I used to use the same cd's (Ridata) with no problems. Some of these back ups are from image files as well.

What could be going on?

Well, here the update on this:

I was using that guide posted above and I was adjusting the lense. It was pretty futile and for about an hour I was being so careful not to rip the damn ribbon, but well something slipped and now shes totally unrepairable. Ah well.
