A DVD is recorded with a home DVD camcorder and then it is played while another program on the computer records the sound.

Is there a program that will take the sound from the DVD video without actually having to watch the video and make it into a wave, mp3, ogg, or some other file format for playback?

You can Demux the audio with lots of software (Virtualdub) depending on the video format then convert audio (BeSweet, VirtualDub, dbpoweramp converter) into any format and mux it back with the original video.

I have been found A1 DVD Audio Ripper to work well but I am still in search of freeware or open source program that does the same thing.

A1 DVD Audio Ripper trial can be downloaded here

i know you only want the audio, what DVD2AVI does is index the movies and creats a .d2v project (which you can discard later since you dont need) and then demuxes the audio to a sepeate files. just under audio select Demux all streams, and then go to FILE > Save Project and thats it, it will Demux the file to whatever format it is in already with no change to the quality in a mere 2-3 minutes, dpending on your computer speed.
