I have found that using DVD santa is good for turning AVI files to playable dvds on your Xbox. and i also use DVD shrink for DVDs and it works great for me.

Tracert You might also want to try DVDFab Decrypter, VoBlanker along with DVD shrink as they are free and work great for someone just started burning. If you want to get the best for doing DVD's, try AnyDVD and Clone DVD II. I promise you will not be sorry. Slysoft gives you a 21 free trial period and the program is a full working program and not those wimpy let you use part of the options.Do check

I reckon Clone DVD2 leaves Nero for Dead!!
After being a bit of a Nero Fan I now don't even like using it with Shrink for DVDs

@dannykiwi.....have you tried out Nero Recoder2? it's by the same people that did Shrink.... very similar and it's petty good. I used it on Northern Exporsure Season 1 and it came out great. I also use a lot of programs and it's fun to find out what works and what doesn't.
