I am new to backing up PS2 games but I have trawled through all these threads trying to find answers.
I bought a modded PS2 which had some back-up ps2 games already with it, and they work perfectly - the media they use is "DATAWRITE". I have a dvd burner, I have used DVD Decrypter and I am using Verbatim 16X DVD-R.
I have followed all step by step instructions, updated firmware and even tried changing "WNASPI32.DLL" in system32. Everything I have tried is to no-avail.
Whenever I make a copy of my PS2 all the same files are on the back-up as the original, but when I put it in the PS2 machine it goes to browser and it says "reading disc". After a short while it comes up with the message "disc error".
If anyone can shed any light on this problem it would be greatly appereciated.

Yes did all that mate as per all the tutorials in here. The ISO burns fine on to disc as I can see all the files on the back-up when I look at it on my PC.

u cud try burnin at 8x, many ppl recommend u burn at half the discs speed, it could be that ur ps2 doesnt like the 16x discs, or your laser might need cleanin.
also do u know what modchip is in ur ps2

The real problem is most likely the 16X discs, a lot of PS2 just have a problem with them.
1. when you burn with DVD Decrypter are you burning the MDS file and not the ISO file like you should?
2. Try getting some quality 8X DVD-R and burning them at 4X. You will have much better luck with those
3. how is the PS2 modded, there are plenty of ways to mod a PS2.
4. were the games that worked also on 16X discs?
5. what game are you tryin to burn? If you have a good modchip this really should not matter. But if you use Swap Magic it does as it may be a game that requires rebuilding.
6. have you tried cleaning the laser? This may help. But do not use one of those discs, do it manually with a cotton swab and lens cleaner or rubbing alcohol
sorry for all the questions but the more questions you answer the better chance someone has to narrow your problem down.
"my games won't work" is a pretty common question with a lot of different possibilities.

Sorry mate will try and narrow it down for you.
1. Yes I am burning the MDS file just burnt another one off it ended up been a Coaster.
2. The PS2 has a magic 3.1 modchip in it.
3. It doesn't say on the "Datawrite" discs what speed they are, so I can't tell you one of the games is burnt on a 4X however - and works.
4. I'm trying to burn "Th2 Incredibles" the file is only about 1.5 Gb
5. I have not tried cleaning the laser yet as it works for the other copies.
Cheers for your time.

is that the only title you've tried yet?
if so, at 1.5 gigs, the game _might_ need to be rebuilt... Though I'm not sure as I havn't messed with that title..
But I concur with the rest, 16x discs are nothing but trouble usually..

It's not the only title I've tried with "Total overdose", & "Prince of Persia-Sands of Time". I thought you only had to re-build them when they were over 4.3Gbs.

yeah 1.5gig will never need rebuilding, rebuilding is required when usin swap magic and the game is 4.37gig or higher, total overdose needs a rebuild and so do most ea games.
are u usin swap magic?

you dont need to rebuild any games with a modchip
you need to try some other disks, your ps2 by the sound of it doesnt like those verbatims
go to svp and either buy a sample pack of DVD-R,or some riteks

First off.. are the discs you are using the same format that the guy before you used, ie DVD-R or DVD+R? if they are +r try booktyping them.. if that doesn't work, get some 8x DVD-R discs and give them a try.. either verbatim, taiyo yuden or ritek is a good starting point.
No, you shouldn't need to rebuild almost any games if you're using a modchip.

Paddymail I have tried DVD+R's and tried to bookmark them no joy, the discs that come with it are DVD-R's so that's what I've been using since. I tried using Verbatim but the PS2 just comes up with "disc read error" when your in the browser section. I think I'll try using "Datawrite" which is what the DVD's are that came with the PS2, cheers for info guys.

Cheers for all your info guys but I have just had my first successful back-up. I used "Datawrite yellow" 8X media and it works. On DVD Decrypter the manufacturer type is TTG02 which; in the media thread is "1st Class Media". These are a steal at £7.99 from SVP.co.uk. Incase anyone is intrested I burnt them at 4X. Now I've got a way to stop my little lad from wreaking all his games.
By the way fella's these forums are a wealth of info.

Glad you got it working.. the problem you had was most likely caused by the media being 16X, incompatible with your burner or because maybe you needed a firmware update for the burner maybe.
There's many things that can stop a backup from working, but the main rule of thumb is that when you find a way that works stick to it.. good luck with all your future backups mate :D I get all my media from SVP too, verbatim, taiyo yudens and ritek mostly..
