I'm new to burning in 16:9. I have a video file in 16:9 that I want to burn for viewing on normal DVD players. I burn the files... and the video plays on my PC flawlessly in 16:9. My older DVD player does not even read it. My newer DVD player plays it fine, but in 4:3 squashed up. Is there a way to fix it, perhaps to put those black boxes on the top/bottom to make it play in 16:9 not all squashed up?

ok..... first off what program did you use to burn the DVD? what did you do and what settings.

then:
there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

I have burned DVDs multiple times so far. I've been using 16X discs and they all burn perfectly fine and play perfectly fine when I burn videos meant to play at a 4:3 ratio. However, this time I burn a video that is intended to play at a 16:9 ratio, and it does not want to play in the correct ratio unless I put it in my PC. In my PC, it plays great. In my older DVD player, it get error. In my newer DVD player, it plays at 4:3. I used Nero Burning ROM to burn it. I use Vision Express to do some DVD's if I want it to be encoded in the process. But these files are already in DVD video format.

To clear it up, it's not an issue with the media I am using, as far as I know. I've been using 16X DVD-R discs. They've always played fine in all of my DVD players. Then I throw a 16:9 video at it, that is when problems start to crop up.

I have a vague idea of how to possibly solve this... but it seems like it will take a while, and I'm not even sure if it will work to boot. Thanks for those pointers, though, some useful info up there I didn't know about. :)

Make sure that your DVD player is set to play 16:9. Look for a 'settings' button or something similar on your remote.

You have to go into your dvd player settings and change it to 4:3. Then you can also use your zoom button on your remote to fill it in. That's what the zoom button is for. You can do the same for any 16:9 movie.
