Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find any specific answer using the search feature;

I recently upgraded from my old TDK 840G 8 Speed Max single layer DVD burner to a Lite-On SHM-165H6S 16x Dual Layer Lightscribe burner and am using Nero 6.6.1.4 when burning DVD's.

My problem is this, whereas in the past, the burn speed selection was 1x/2x/4x/8x, my options with the new drive are only 6x/8x/10x/12x/14x/16x. I always use FujiFilm DVD-R's as I've had virtually no problems with them no matter what I put them in, so it's not that the disc type I've been using has changed.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to slow the drives burning speed down to the slower speeds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi agazz
Let's take your Nero version down a notch - go down to 6.6.0.18.
Uninstall, run the clean tool then install 6.6.0.18 (be sure to write down your serial #)
Here's some links:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2 (recode & vision)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

When setting your burn speed make sure you have a blank disc inserted. This should give you all the speeds supported by the disc.

Keep the drives firmware up to date - this can help w/ the read/write strategies of media. The latest version for your drive (updated end of May) is HSOD.

To check which version # you have look in Nero ToolKit>Info Tool>drive tab. A field listing the version # is there.

Since you have a quality new drive you may want to try the higher burn speeds - start w/ 6x and go no higher than the media's rated speed.
Stick w/ quality media too like Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji or Sony. The later 2 if made in Japan are usually made by Taiyo Yuden - one of the best.
Using a good drive and good media - 8x is my minimum burn speed. No problems. Keeping the pc clean and not multitasking is always a + too - to reducing any conflicts or problems.

Thanks for the reply.

Upgraded my firmware (looks like I was 2 updates behind despite having just bought the drive) and downgraded to 6.6.0.18 but still get the same results.

Guess I'll just have to deal with it, and if it becomes an issue with some burns, put the old TDK drive back into my main computer as well and use it when slower speeds are needed.

No problem agazz!
For my 16x drive (pioneer) Nero will list the lower speeds too but I have a LiteOn too (max 8x) and it seems that Nero doesn't always give the best options with this drive. Like booktyping - I can only do it thru Nero CD-DVD Drive Speed and then I have to set it every time - auto doesn't stick.
For the burn speeds: 2x,4,6x,8x are listed.
May be the issue with your burn speeds.

The drives firmware yeah sometimes even a new one may need an update - just depnds when the drive was actually manufactured and if any updates have been released since then.

Try the higher speeds - you may be fine. Fuji uses a few manufacturers and several are good.
