Ok I realize thios has been discussed A LOT, but I have read and done everything I have seen:
Uninstall roxio and run the zapper
Uninstall Nero 7.2.0.3 and run cleaner
flash firmware to 1.0C
Install Nero 7.0.8.2
I'm using DVD-R TDK discs to try and burn a data disc. I was able to successfully burn one on my laptop but this is the error log i get on my desktop:

Welcome to aD
Looks like the biggest problem here is your discs. Those TDK's (16x I think) you have are made by CMC - not the best by far. They can be hit or miss and some drives just do not like them.
Your nec in the desktop is an older burner with the last update in 9/2004. So we have a few possible factors here. The drive does recognize the manufacturer though.
Try using some Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji or Sony - look for ones rated no higher than 8x. This may solve your problem.

Total memory okay - 70% in use so try and free a little more up. No multitasking and shut down unnecessary processes.

thanks for the info. I turned DMA on for the CD drive, but it still didnt work (I dont know why the CD drive would affect it but I tried anyway).
I'm not sure if its the discs because it can read teh one i burned form my laptop fine, but it doesnt like blank ones. Also in Nero I get this when I go to options next to current recorder:
Maximum Speed: not available Disc at once: CueSheet, DAO/96
well it might just be me but it seems like it should have a max speed >.> and the error it gives(not the log, but in the part above the completion bars at the burning stage) is unable to start disc at once. I dont know maybe it has something to do with these?

Its not that I dont believe it I was just wondering if that made a difference. I guess I chose the wrong words :/. O well sorry if im too stupid to realize it doesnt:/. I guess ill try some new discs then post back thx for the info.

Sorry didn't mean to imply that try dma on would help the burn - but best to keep the drives in dma mode.
The part you added about the opinions - the max speed not slowing is the problem if the blank is in the drive. Which would probably lead to the illegal disc error. When a blank is inserted the max speed should be shown here. Looking like your drive does not like these discs to write.
The write method is fine (disc at once).

Ok ill try to get some new media from what ive been reading it seems like Verbatim/ Sony made in Japan are the best. Ill try to pick up some of those.

Let's us know how those go.
Look for no higher than 8x though - your drive may have problems w/ 16x media (which I think you are currently using in the TDK's).
8x instore in the US is getting harder and harder to find. May not be a problem where you are though.

Okay - yep since this drive hasn't had an update since 9/2004 16x is not for this drive. Maybe Verbs but try and find the 8x speed.

Woooo! ok I bought some 8x Sonys (made in Taiwan not Japan but oh well >.>) and it seems to be working fine. at 16% right now. Thx for the info. I have a feeling it was the 16x discs that were the problem because they worked fine on my newer laptop but not on my older desktop. Thx soooo much!

Glad to hear the Sony's are working for you!
They're probably made by Sony themselves - used quite a few myself with good results.
I'd use them on your lappy too - much better in the long than the CMC (been there done that - lol).
Since your in the US check out this site for Taiyo Yuden's (what I mainly use and usually made in Japan Fuji or Sony are made by also)

I just did a firmware update for my Plextor DVD and it specifically mentioned the update was partially for compatability with the TDK media.
