Quote:The front of the console features a self-loading media drive illuminated by a blue light and accepts 12 cm Wii optical discs and 8 cm GameCube Optical Discs.[2] Nintendo has stated that a small attachment can be equipped to play DVD Video.[11] The ability to load different sized discs is uncommon in slot-loading media drives, which typically only accept discs of a single size.
The drive will take regular sized dvds (12cm) and the smaller gcn dvds (8cm) as stated in the hardware section of the official nintendo wii site wii.nintendo.com
In order to play dvd movies you will have to buy a hardware piece to stick onto the wii, not a whole seperate drive (the seperate drive was necessary for the gcn due to it's drive only accepting 8cm dvds, and not the regular 12cm dvds)
Quote:Media: A single self-loading media bay will play single- or double-layered 12-centimeter optical discs for Wii, as well as 8-centimeter Nintendo GameCube discs.
This would lead me to believe Wii games will be on both single layer and double layered dvds, as Nintendo has already stated their opposition to using Blu-ray and HD-DVD
Quote:They are proprietery dvd- sized disks, to my knowledge.
when you say proprietery dvd- sized disks, do you mean proprietary to the extent of it is still a dvd, just slightly modified for the system, or completely different physical medium?
I can't see Nintendo coming out with an entierly new physical storage medium for the Wii.. tho it would be a good way to prevent illegal game copying.
