Hi,
I went to buy Sony DVD-R dvd's so that i can backup my ps2 games on them. But when i saw where the discs were made,it said "Made in Taiwan". I wanted to know if i can use these DVD's to copy my games or should i search for Sony DVD's which say "Made in Japan",cumpolsorily?
Iam confused if Taiwan or Japan are the same.Has anyone ever bought the Sony DVD Made in Taiwan discs. What is the probability of having a flawless copy if i burn my game on Made in Taiwan discs & not Made in Japan discs? Thanks ya all.

Alot of stuff is made in taiwan these days, because of cheap labour etc. But a reputable company like sony should ensure qaulity materials are used and over see the manufacturing process. load up DVDdecrypter and insert a your disc and check the media code against the codes in this thread. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/240341 If they check out you should be ok.

rule of thumb is that made in Japan is going to be better.
In some brands like Sony and Maxcell i was told that made in Japan is the only way to go. But i have not tested that theory.
I do know never to buy 16X discs. Stick with 8X DVD-R
Or you can just go online and order some DVD's from a store like Supermediastore.com and get some real Taiyo Yudens.
Make sure if you order online that is is a well respected source.

It's not the country people should be paying attention to, It's the manufacture. SONY (MIT) are not CMAG or otherwise known as poor quality disc. This whole theory seems to center around Tayo Yuden being known for quality DVD media and preferences shown here at afterdawn and other forum sites for this media. Because it cannot be determined who actually manufactures SONY's (MIT) it is grossly assumed with no proof at all that they (SONY MIT) are of lesser or inferior quality. I have used both and own plenty of both MIT & MIJ in 8x -R though I do not own any SONY media in 16x, which does not matter because this is an old overated concern shown to support a TY preference. Verbatims, are MIT made all day, and are seen to most to be better or as good a TY. So the geographic ploy is more of a hoax because this theory cannot be proven. Because SONY has gone to 16x I preferably use VERBATIM 16x because from what I read about their product they seem to have lead the industry in R&D on this type of media and speed along with promoting (like SONY) a promise of quality recording and archieving when using their product. Again, Made In Taiwan. SONY is just quality media plain and simple. At a normal MSRP price of $59.99 for a 100 disc spindle, who sells crap for that price? It's your choice, but refuse to be mislead.:p

N2DVD,
It has been proven, have you never read a DVD media guide? there are many of them out there and most will tell you the same thing.
The DVD's were tested by various independant groups.
And by the way Sony was in the top class (both MIT & MIJ). But Taiyo Yuden is widely seen as the very best there is. Not just because people say it, because of the media test that have been run. No offense meant but people here suggest what works. I have been backing up games and movies for years, and have tried more than my share of DVD's.
read around the forums and you will find more posts about people having problems with 16X discs then you will people who have had any big success. There is no big conspiracy to stear people towards certain brands or regions, it's not like they are paying me for referals or anything.

Top Quality Media (longest dye life, 10+ years... Classified as AA Grade Media, Highest Quality!)

Taiyo Yudon (with YUDENT, TYG0x dye, many fakes made, make sure you are getting the real thing!)
Ritek (G03/G04 dye, many fakes made, make sure you are getting the real thing!)
Verbatim (with MCC02, MCC, MKM (DL) dye)
Fuji MIJ
Maxell (Japan) (with MXLRG0x dye)
Sony (Japan/Taiwan) (with SONY0xD dye)
TDK (with TDK, TTG0x, TTH0x dye)

Medium Quality Media (medium dye life.)

Ritek (G05/M02/R02/R03)
Samsung (mostly uses TYG01 dye)
Clone disc (made by Ritek)
Traxdata (made by Ritek)
Arita (made by Ritek w/ G05 code)
Memorex (mostly uses CMC Magnetics)
Imation (mostly uses CMC Magnetics)
Maxell (mostly uses CMC Magnetics)
Prodisc (by pioneer)
Philips (mostly uses CMC Magnetics)
Panasonic
Infodisc

Low Quality Media (minimal dye life! This media should be avoided at all costs. I am not saying the brand names below will not work, but the chances of them working and lifespan of the discs is simply terrible! The discs below use the lowest quality dye possible.) (Note: The average dye lifespan for these discs is around 1-2 years.)

Optodisc
AZO
Platinum
Linkyo
Economy
BudgetAZO
Beall
Ultran
HP
SuperMedia
Dynex
Aleratec
Princo (TDK Ripoffs)
Mitsui
Bulkpaq (Fake Ty's)

steimy,
SONY MIT being inferior has never been proven (conjecture at best). I did not say Tayo was not good media....I spoke to the preference of TY being used to downplay other brands unjustly i.e. SONY, MIT, or If it aint MIJ it's no good? Which for so many obvious reasons, Is not true. No offense taken at all. I also mentioned that I do not use 16x SONY. But again not using 16x at all? Is your preference. You have your points or opinions and I have mine. No need to get bent outta shape. Just offering my educated opinion to forum member Indian9:p

No worries, i do not take offense to opinions, only personal attacks which you did not do.
I have some 16X at home now and either my burner or all my burning programs hate them. I get disc read errors on them about every other one i stick in. And having a BenQ DW1655, which is a top notch burner that has burned everything else, so i figure it was just the media. Just my personal experence. It's 8X DVD-R all the way for me.
when i can get the 16X to actually burn they have worked fine for movie, but not too great with Xbox or PS2 games.

You do know that you will need more than just Swap Magic alone to play your back ups right?
The other thing you need depends on what version PS2 you have.
But you need something like an aftermarket fliptop that you install so that when you go to open it and swap discs the PS2 will not reset.

Also i would not start your burning with God Of War. It is a dual layer disc and will take a bit of work. I would start out with something a bit more simple.

but just in case there is a link to some PS2 tools including the
Sonic God Of War tool you will hear mentioned in the posts you read about it.
