I've recently started backing up PS2 games and I've been burning them to Nexxtech 8x DVDs at 2x. I've then started reading some guides telling me not to use low class media, but I've looked everywhere and I can't find any information at all about Nexxtech. And now I'm confused about the speed I should burn them at, since every other thread I've seen says to burn at the lowest speed possible, and then another saying burning at low speeds is bad, and you should burn at the speed the DVDs are made for.

Another thing I've tried is turning the white gear to move the laser closer or farther to help with DRE. I'm using swap magic 3.6 and my PS2(ver 5 or 6) sometimes reads it, but most of the time doesn't. So I decided to try and mess with it to get it to read better. What I've found out is that moving it closer makes it more successful reading the swap magic, but less successful reading the backups. So I was wondering if using better DVDs like Sony will solve this problem so I can move the laser closer, but games could still be read successfully.

Ok, since you recently started, go buy you some quality DVD-R's. I personally use Sony DVD+R (8x and 16x) with a slim ps2 and never had any problems. But version 5 or 6 doesn't like +r (not even sure if it supports it) so I'd say get 8x DVD-R from Sony.. If you can't find 8x get 16x if your burner supports it.

I know alot of people that said to burn at the lowest possible speed but that's just different people's opinions. But if you burn your disc at 1/2 the rated speed, with no programs running in the background, you'll have a high success rate. Burning at 1 or 2x even 2.4 or 4x has produced nothing but problems for me with the 16x Sony DVD+R.

Oh yeah, since you moved your laser, I can safely assume that your laser is going bad so do NOT play any games you have burned already as it will wear your laser out faster. Redo the games you've done already on quality media and you'll be good to go, especially since you just recently started :) I learned about quality media after I had 55 games burned.. That hurt

Thanks for the help, it's really appreciated. What's funny is that normal PS2 games(even blue CDs) work at ANY height I put that laser, it's basically just swap magic and the backups that need tweaking. I'm taking your advice and I'm going to buy some high quality DVD-Rs.

I'm like PS2Menace. I use Sony DVD+R. For my movies and games. I've never had a problem yet.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does the speed the DVD can burn matter at all other than the speed you're able to write? Would it matter if I got 4x or 8x Taiyo Yuden? To me it seems that it's like getting a newer version of something, so it might be higher quality(other than speed it can write obviously)?

Edit: The 4x say Value Line and the 8x are Premium. I mean, did they just give it the rating of Value Line because of the slow speed, or do they only rate that in terms of quality?

the 4x are older media, therefore value priced compared to the 8x. I'd say go with 8x if your dvd burner can support it.

I've gotten my 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs today and I tried burning some games. It's doing exactly the same thing(same loading noises, and doesn't load up) as with the 8x NexxTech DVD+Rs. It's as if we never changed media. My PS2 is a version 5 or 6, and my friend's is a version 7. The version 7 works fine even with the NexxTech DVDs, not a single game has as much as a hickup. My DVD drive is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B, just in case that information is important.
