I was wondering if Nero vision 4 can convert asf files on to a dvd?
the reason i ask is because i have done two successful make DVDs using a video clip and using WMV/A files and have worked great, but when i have tried asf files i get an error everytime after the transcoding is done and it is about to create the video_ts folder, the error is "unable to prepare data".

OK, So I just asked myself how would I do the conversion. First I had to find an .asf to download. I rarely download anything so I had to Google a bit.
I found some death metal clip called Evil Dentist by PanDaemon...

I downloaded it, unzipped it and used VSO's ConvertXtoDVD to convert to DVD.
Which it did.

Now on to NeroVision...
Nero Vision simply rejects it with the "Unable to insert" message. Fine, lets make this a good test by resetting all of Nero's file associations. I downloaded and installed 7.2.3.2b which was just released. I did a custom install to avoid Nero Home, Photosnap, etc, all the other mini hijackers Nero seems to be infested with nowdays.

I made sure .asf was associated and finished the install. Rebooted and opened Vision.
...And still was unable to open the .asf.

So....

ConvertX is the way I'd do it if I really wanted to burn this to a DVD. It is much simpler and leaves me with vobs I can add to Nero Vision if I want to edit with Vision. Primarily though, I couldn't even get Nero to open it!

You got further with it than I did.

Seems to me though if you get an error before the VIDEO_TS is created then there is an error during the transcoding... kinda splitting hairs though. At least it opened in the program for you.

Vision is OK for quite a few more mainstream file types but it always seems to choke on wma and other windows media file types. It has gotten better but I'm not surprised it still has problems. I wouldn't download without ConvertX in my toolbox,IMHO.

@fasfrank, I agree with you, ConvertX is a great program. I am d/l Nero7.2.3.2b to give it a "trial" just to be sure I know what I say about it is correct, I have some AVI files I successfully burned with 7.0.8.2 that I will try and burn, looking forward to the results, Cheers.

hi fasfrank,

yeah Nero vision is like a crap shoot for me, i have tried making DVD's 7 times with different types of files and only 3 times has the VOB files came out fine, and the ones that worked seemed to be Mpeg's and WMV files, as far as the asf files everytime there was an error when trying to create the VOB files. kind of sucks too because it takes about 1-3 hours to do the transcoding and then i get this error.
Anyway, is the VSO DivX to DVD program the same as VSO convertX to DVD because i have that program but havent tried that and if it isn't do you have to pay for VSO convertX 2 DVD

VSO's ConvertXtoDVD is the new version of DivXtoDVD.
They thought the name mislead people to believe that it was strictly a DivX to DVD converter when it actually handled many file types.

I used the most current version of ConvertX for my .asf conversion test. Try yours and see what it does. IMO, if you are doing a lot of download conversions then ConvertX is worth the money. Like I said before, once the conversion is done you could use Nero Vision to do the editing with.

I used the Nero vision (in my Nero 7) to burn an AVI to dvd.. it played in the regular DVD player, but I have a lot of trouble getting chapters menus to display properly on the DVD (it's only one AVI file, kinda big).. it would scan the chapters automatically, but some of them would not show a pic/screenshot for the menu scree, so Nero puts in it's logo for the chapter pic (who wants to see that when you put a DVD in the player??) I can change the background pic, but not the menu pic..

i was trying to move the time slider for those particular chapters to try and get a pic/screenshot, but the program gets hung up for a LONG time trying to refresh, and then it still doesn't put in the frame-pic/screenshot for those chapters anyway.. it's a great program for AVI to dvd and easy to use, except chapter menu pics/screenshots won't display right (shows the Nero logo instead of a screenshot for chapters menus).. again, it only happens to some of the chapters..

Any suggestions Please?? I use Windows XP SP2..

Thanks much..
