Background: I'm no newbie, that is I'm a veteran of dvd to dvd copies; however I'm no longer satisfied with recompressing already outdated mpeg2 back into mpeg2.

Goal: I want to use lossless MPEG-4 Part 10/AVC on my dvd's hopefully in a way that will make it playable on HD and BR DVD players but will settle for exclusive computer playback at least for now.

Current Situation: I've just given up on recode, the first pass takes 16+ hours and then my laptop shuts off loosing everything (tried several versions of recode & Nero and several different new OS installs). So my next choice is a multistep approach using Main Concept H.264 Encoder v2 and then burning with Nero. The MC H.264 encoder only accepts .AVI and .MPG. AVI is out because it would be an added conversion unless there is a way to put the dvd video files verbatim into that container.

So, the Questions: How do i get the DVD's MPEG2 data into an .mpg file bit for bit? Is this stupid? Also, recode makes very small files but the only conversion I've done in MC h.264 was with a < 1meg sample file and in base, main and high profile it made the file much larger!! Maybe it has a minimum file size? I'll find out more once i do dvd to MPG.

Is there any alternative to recode or something I'm missing? I'm trying to get lossless here but am also open minded if someone wants to convince me there is a better "perceived lossless" alternative
