I have a odd situation about a Memorex DVD-R on the spindle was showing a warning about to update the firmware on the dvd burner if was below a 16x writing speed in order not to damage the burner, since my burner was a 16x i did not put much attention and tried to burn a few video files always getting a burn error mostly saying was a bad media.
Then I just try to use another brand and the same error over and over, tired just get the video files to another computer and used again teh memorex 16x media same issue there, tried another brand and still so I was thinking maybe is the file, I tried to make a backup and then copy a movie and always was teh erro about bad media, 1 burner still able to burn cdr discs the other I tried to update the firmaware but is gonme so what is the media doing to the burner how this can be done using a disc?

just curious as to what I may be doing wrong here...

I bought a pack of Taiyo Yuden 4x from Meritline and burned w/standard settings in dvdShrink on my Emprex 8x burner.

Here's the nice lil screenshot of the result.

I've not been able to play any backed-up dvd's without hiccups or complete failures at all.

Do I need a differnt burner? A different player?? Suggestions for either?

I've gone through a lot of the guides and I'm still kinda stumped. Thanks a lot for pointing a noob in the right direction.

I'd say new burner. It looks like you are using the stock burner that came with your computer.

Have you tried looking for a firmware update? Also those disks are TYG03, which are 16x DVD-R disks, by Taiyo Yuden. Not 4x like you stated.

i've been checking out firmware updates for that Emprex burner, found this http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=145930 and this http://www.emprex.com/03_support_02.php?pg_no=20&group=57&kind=1

..it seems 0060 is the latest firmware for that particular burner...i don't like those generic burnes myself

Crap... I ordered 4x SPECIFICALLY.

Could anyone recommend a stable (but not TOO expensive) burner? (perhaps player as well?)

Thanks!

I just bought this one here.

Only 30 bucks US, but does Dual layer, Booktype, and lightscribe. Also can burn @ 18X! I only burn @ half of what my media is rated, but it can do it just the same. For the money, this is one heck of a deal.

cool deal. I'll have to try it out.

Is there a huge difference in burning quality between the TYG03 and the TY01? (Like I said in my previous post, I ordered 4x specifically, but after a burn and a test, NeroDriveSpeed said it's TYG03.

Reason I'm asking is becuase if I can use the TYG03 with that burner you recomended and they work fine, I'd rather not go through the whole RMA processes w/Meritline. If not, I'll return and try to get the TYG01's

I believe the only real difference is the burn speed. With the proper burner, burn speed, and firmware, the end result should be fine.

Many of the TY users on this board will tell you that they prefere the 8X and 4X variety of TY over the 16X. I guess there are still some issues with the 16X TYs that haven't been worked out in the firmwares yet.

I only use 8X myself.

I bought some value line TY 8X that turned out to be TYG03. I didn't have any problems with them. I figure that they were sold as 8X because the quality may have not been good enough for 16X. I usually get TYG02 or Verbatim MCC02RG20 (8X) and burn them at 12X with no problems. Most may want to argue with me about that but the scans from discs I burn at 4X, 8X or 12X look about the same. I don't use 16X very often because it doesn't seem to be any faster than 12X generally. I wouldn't do this with lesser quality discs, but all I buy are usually TY or Verbatim. Lately I've been getting better results with the Verbatims than the TY.
