My total filesize is 1441660 KB (1.37 GB). So if I use VirtualDub to split this
file into Two equal parts (as shown in the tut.), I should get two files of more or less 720830 KB (704 MB). But instead, one is of about 656 MB in size and the other file is about 738 MB. The 656 MB file is no problem, but there is no way that I know of, in which you can burn a 738 MB file into one CD (except overburning, which by the way, I don't want to risk). I want to fit this video file into not more than 2 CDs.
Total no. of frames in the video file is 195682. So that divided by two = 97841. But in VirtualDub, on the slider (or whatever it is called), that frame number doesn't appear. The closest variants are 97740 and 97942. So I selected 97942. Anyway, this should not be a problem, according to the statement in the tutorial that says : don't get too paranoid about this -- anything nearby should be ok'.

Note: This is the first time I am encoding a DVD to XviD format using this tutorial-

After that, when I used VFAPI Converter 1.05 EN to make the VFAPI AVI file, it created an EMPTY (0 byte) AVI file. To get around this problem, I used DGIndex ver(1.1.0) to make the example.d2v file, and then when I used the VFAPI Converter on this file, it created a VFAPI AVI file of an actual size (may be less than 100 MB, i don't remember correctly). This is the file that I finally used, not the zero byte file. But anyway, I don't know why this matters, as the video got successfully encoded to XviD, and the problem is only with splitting it into 2 equal halves.
The program splits the file into 2 parts, one of 575MB, one of 553MB. Strange that, the filesize added up comes to 1128 MB, whereas, the size of the source file is 1402. Anyways, that's none of my buisness really, as long as the two files fit on one CD each.
But what IS my buisness is that the files donot work! Here's the error message Windows Media Player 11 gives:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
Problem solved! I used AVI Chop, which came in the package of 'ACE Mega Codecs Pack'. The main problem in the other file splitting programs was that it split the according to the length (the total running time of the video), but AVI Chop splits the file according to the size.
