Hi all. It seems that my Pioneer DVR-108XLA is on its last legs. I have read many threads started here about dvd burners and I find that the general agreement is that the Benq 1650 and 1655 are great burners. However, I have also seen some posts that say these are good if you plan to use dvd+ media. I use dvd- media. I don't quite understand it, but I think it has been posted that it is set to +media???
Will this be a problem if I get a benq1650 or 1655? Or should I think about another burner that is better suited for -media?
Thanks.

The DVD-R media will play fine on most home Dvd players but for the most compatable format use the DVD+R media and booktype it to Dvd-Rom.
Your Benq is quite capable of doing this.

Best of luck.

For stand alone compatability, the booktyped backups of the plus format will give a heck of a lot higher rate, than the dash-from benq DVD-RW drives.

All 4 of mine are fabulous for my personal players and 4 pcs with either format. However,I have a few friends and family members whose only issues are with the dash format.

What I'd do is:

Burn a couple of your remaining dash discs.Make sure your drives recognize them.If OK,then burn them up.
After that, get some quality plus format and booktype them. After that,a lot less compatability issues. Those Q's love MCC-003/MCC-004/Yuden000-T02/Maxell-002-00,Ritek-R03. They burn everything I slap in them.

When it comes to compatability on our dvd backups:
Every burner, stand alone player,pc dvd drive, and console game drives can vary by individual. You'll have to find the right format that suits your needs. Switch burners, then you may have to switch format. There's a lot of variations on those drives as to how well they will read dvd backups. Going with the plus format, booktyped to dvd-rom will give you the highest possible compatable rate.

Out of the many, many, many different dvd drives that my backups have been played on,I have yet to find a player that will only play my dash backups, and not my booktyped backups.

If you send your backups to a lot of buddies, then booktype them. Only personal viewing, then the dash may be ok? Test a few!

i no longer even bother checking what format my blanks are in, i just pick up a tub and burn at 8x. never had a problem with dash backups in many 1000s of burns on quite a few different players. I only use TY discs btw
