Ive got a lot of 320kbps CBR MP3s that I have either downloaded or being sent on disc that have a frequency response all the way to 21kHz! How is this possible?! I thought MP3s rolled off material at around 16Khz.

The best high end I can get using LAME at 320kbps is around 16-17kHz maximum, with LAME's Alt Preset Extreme being the best quality I can get. With this setting, a high end of 18-19kHz is achieveable.

So how is it possible for an MP3 to contain so much information? It looks like an uncompressed CD track would, so whats the secret here?

Thank you to anyone in advance.

Beats me!!What codec was used for the encoding?

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

It differs. The most recent one I checked was encoded with Gogo (according to EncSpot Basic), although others have been LAME, ripped used EAC.

Ive tried to rip on all sorts of the Alt Presets but can only get 19k or so with dBpowerAmp on Alt Preset Extreme but would really like to know how to get higher!

how are you sure that you're getting a frequency response of over 20Khz in the first place?

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

it could always be ambient sound from a bad encoding job, but the fact that you're using LAME would make me think against that. Which version of LAME are you using?
