I just hooked up an HP burner to my computer and using the software it included Sonic myDVD, I've been trying to make copies of my DVDs recorded with my Philips DVDR985... it gives me an error at the end... anyone have any experience with this?

I have a similar scenario except I am using the Sony DRU510 to recover damaged DVD+R disks from the Philips DVDR985. What kind of error are you receiving from Sonic myDVD, which recording format are you using on the Philips recorder, and is the disk finalized? I will try out copying a few DVD+R?s that are finalized and I?ll see what happens.

By the way how is your DVDR985 working, I?m not impressed with it. It crashes to often at the end of a recording session (before finalizing) and destroys the DVD+R disk. I have found a way to extract the video files off the DVD+R disk using Arrowkey Inc.?s CD/DVD Diagnostic software, and I can play them with Cyberlink PowerDVD and a couple of other players but I can?t figure out how to import the VOB files into Sonic myDVD, I keep coming up with errors. Do you know of any DVD Authoring software that can do this, my goal is to recover the video (no audio used) and make a DVD disk that will play in any PC or stand-alone player?

I have got the original 880 recorder.

I don't use +r anymore, just the +rw cos it kept trashing them during finalising aswell.

Anyway, Mydvd is an authoring software that CREATES the vob/ifo/bup files that are required for dvd compliance.

I believe it will only recognise mpeg files etc.

I tried it and a couple of times it worked but it was very hit and miss.

I use recordnowmax/nero for all my burning needs.

I treated my +rw (recording off the tv) just like an original.
Ripped it to the hd.
Processed it with dvd2one
Burned it back to -R - with no problems exactly the same as what was on the +rw.

I do it this way cos -r are alot cheaper than +r and so I just re-use the +rw then.
(no need to finalise the +rw - do not think you can anyway)
Hope this helps.....

THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES!

The error says something along the lines of the the file is not a recognized format/video file (but this after a long time and it seems to be working... the kicker is that there are very specific instructions with the burner how to work with my Philips)... I wonder if it is because of the chapter points that were automatically included in the Philips recordings...

Do these instructions sound right?

Adding clips from discs recorded on DVD video recorders
You can add the contents of DVD+RW discs recorded on Philips DVD video recorders to your projects (DVD-Video projects only):

Insert the DVD+RW disc in your PC's DVD-ROM drive or DVD recorder. (If a software DVD player launches, close it before continuing.)
Open the disc in Windows Explorer, then open the "VIDEO_TS" folder on the disc and locate the file named "VIDEO_TS.IFO".
Drag the "VIDEO_TS.IFO" file onto MyDVD's Menu Editor.
MyDVD creates buttons for each clip and chapter point. The buttons are labeled "VTS_01_1 1", "VTS_01_1 2", and so on. You can change the button labels later - see Editing menu titles and button labels.

Save the project. MyDVD then copies the disc contents into the project's "Sources" folder on your PC.
When MyDVD finishes copying, eject the DVD+RW disc. You can then continue working on the project.
Note: If you record the project back onto a DVD+RW disc, you will not be able to edit the disc in the Philips DVD video recorder.

As far as my 985 working... it's OK... it's really crappy with 'lower-cost' blank DVDs (RITEK and other spindels I've bought I have a 10% rejection rate)... However, I've copied about 50 to 60 with FUJIs or HP blanks and zero errors... I also get some power errors once in a while... overall I'm not that stoked on it as I'm worried it's gonna fizz out on me any minute...

Looks like my version of Mydvd is primative compared to the version you have.

I have no option to drag in the video_ts.ifo, where it will generate the chapter points for you.

It could be a media issue aswell.

The way I would test that is:
Just try to drag the complete dvd folder (off the dvd) and drop it to a folder on ur desktop.
(within windows) - if it has trouble reading then you will see the transfer SLOW up and probably the led on the reader will flash.(where normally it would appear to be on).

My dvdrom does have some problems reading the +r (another reason I only use +rw) - (philips +rw)
What version is it, I think I'll have a play with that...

EastBay71 ? I have followed the procedure you posted and I did not receive any errors transferring the file to myDVD. I used both a DVD+RW and finalized DVD+R. Although I did have a few other errors that are probably due to the lack of resources on this PC (no audio and just about out of room on the primary HD), therefore I will be transferring the DVD hardware to another PC that can handle it. The version of myDVD I?m using is ver 4.5.0 Build 72152 running on Windows 2000 SP3 and my drive is using NTFS format. This might be a long shot but, what operating system are you running and what format are you using on the HD? I don?t remember the max file size between FAT/FAT32/NTFS, but you might be running into max file size issues and not copying the entire file off the DVD. I?ve run into similar issues with capturing video. If you try baabaa?s test by dragging and dropping the video file to the desktop you might see this error. What I do know is that a chapter?s max size is limited to just over 1 gig, a HD formatted to FAT/FAT32 will not be able to handle a file of this size, NTFS will.

baabaa ? I will try using the Philips DVD+RW disks as masters then using my Sony DVD drive to copy it to a DVD+R disk for archiving. This might be a better option, as we are not recording all the chapters or video clips at one time. We add clips ranging from 1 minute to 4 hours, depending on an incident, then close out or finalize the disk when full. And correct you do not finalize a RW disk, just write protect.

Thank you for the responses, I?ll let you know how it turns out.
