Hi, I apologise for the proverbial newbie question in advance....
I have a load of old family videos (PAL format) between 4 to 10 years old originally filmed with a jvc video camera which must have been made some 10-15 years ago - the videos are small mini video casettes. I have a canopus advc 100 to capture the video onto my hard disc and obviously I need to encode the resultant raw AVI to Mpeg2 and then author. The question I have, is which software is the best encoding software for this purpose - bearing in mind a limited budget (up to, say, $100). From my research the main contenders are TMPGEnc 2.5 or 4.0 (other than price and the extra functions that 4.0 has - is the 4.0 encoding software better than 2.5 - I haven't managed to find any reviews of this version)and procoder express (is this the same encoding engine as procoder 2 - without the bells and whistles?) and CCE Basic version (I understand there's a version, the "SP" version, that retails for $1,995 or so - that's way out of my league).
My computer's CPU is is an intel P2 2.67 (no hyperthreading) and has half a gig of memory.
I note in other forums there are postings on the relative differences between encoders and transcoders for backing up DVD's - here I am looking for something else - a good encoder (better than can be found in a Nero or Ulead type consumer package) for AVI that had originally been captured from video.
Many thanks!

If you haven't found anything yet, give WinAVI a try. There's a (watermarked) trial so you'll know what you're getting.

from what I understand, there is a 30 day trial with no watermark for the TMPGEnc plus 2.5. I have had constant trouble with it, but don't know anyone else that does. Try it. I also have WinAvi and it is really simple to use. I do believe that TMPGEnc is a better converter quality wise, just what I heard (any opinions?)
