Hello, I am trying to use Nero to burn a backup DVD of some of my work and I keep on getting the same error.
Message in the dialog box:
Burn process failed at 8x (same happens with all speeds though)
The Event lister says:
Invalid field in command
Could not perform start of Disc-at-once
Burn process failed

Hello.
Your version of Nero is pretty old. The best version of Nero 6 isn't the latest crippled version but version 6.6.0.18 available here:

Run the Nero 6 Clean Tool first to uninstall the old version. Be sure to write down your program serial number first.

There's a newer firmware UYS3 available for your laptop burner here:

Click on the firmware version number to download it. It's probably an executable so double click it when downloaded to open it and begin the process.
You're burning as a multisession disk. Is this what you want? It's not really a good idea to try to burn write-once media as multisession. Try using a RW disk instead. Or uncheck multisession and do Disk At Once instead.

You're writing up to the outer edge of the disk which increases the chance of failure both at the time of burn ing and later when trying to read. It's best to limit the size of DVD5s to 4300 or 4350mb.
Are you just burning data or video or backing up a DVD? What other programs are you using?

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
Well I tried updating the firmware as you suggested but had an error from that site saying:
No matched drive detected!
This utility is only for SONY DVD RW DW-Q58A drive.
Detected drives:

Which is interesting! Such a subtle variance in the naming but it seems to be making all the difference...
About the size of data and edge of disk, good point, thanks I'll take some stuff off. I'm new to writing DVDs really so I shall keep that in mind.
I'm just burning a data DVD with backup of my old work so I can free up some space. Nothing fancy.
Didn't think the multisession would matter so much, so kept it. For what its worth though, I have tried to burn without it and the burning still failed.

You might try the Lite-On firmware here since the burner is likely a rebadged Lite-On:

Scroll down to the DVD±RW Drives (Slimtype/Laptop) section and locate the Q58A firmware. The latest seems to be UYS3. I don't see anything at the Dell site. This is a Dell system, isn't it?
I also found this link to firmware at a Dell forum; it's not an official Dell firmware release however:

There aren't any guarantees with firmwares unfortunately so it's your choice whether to try them or not.
Laptop burners are finicky unfortunately. I assume you've had success in the past with this same blank media.

Hey,
Funnily enough before updating anything (not software nor firmware), I just thought I'd try the other stuff you mentioned all in one go and it worked!
so I reduced the amount of data being burned to 4.3GB in total and unticked the multisession option, making it No Multisession (although the write method area was still greyed out with disc-at-once as the default and I couldn't access that drop down menu so unaware what I could have possibly changed there).
But these two changes did the job in this case.
I just double-checked the burned DVD and it seems fine so far so obviously Nero didn't like my previous combo of settings.. However, surely if one wanted multisession it would be doable on a normal DVD-R?!
For the record I'm using Datawrite Classic 16x 4.7GB General Purpose DVD-Rs. They have worked fine on other PCs and laptops. My laptop is a new Dell one yes (good guess - how did you know?)
In any case, I thought I'd let you know. I'm gonna probably update to a more recent version of Nero soon though, as it would make sense (and hopefully yield more options).

I'm happy you fixed your problem, ShePixel.
My advice on multisession is to use RW media. Once you have everything you need on the RW, you can copy and burn that to a write once -R or +R. Write once (+R-R) and rewriteables (-RW+RW) have different methods of keeping track of what's on the disk. I have better luck with rewriteables in this case and they seem to be more compatible with Nero multisessions. Also if you have a burn failure you don't make a useless Coaster.
I would suggest however that if the info you're offloading is really important, you make more than one copy, or better yet, keep another copy on a backup hard drive. Hard drives and external enclosures are fairly cheap these days, it pays to have a backup. I imagine your lappy has either or both a Firewire and/or USB2 port which is all you need.
Your media has the code TTH02 which means it was actually made by TDK. Many media brands use media made by others. The only way to know for sure who made the media in most cases is to use a program that extracts that information. Most of us here recommend Taiyo Yuden (available online), Sony and Fuji media labeled as made in Japan (since it's likely made by Taiyo Yuden), and Verbatim (media code MCC for Mitsubishi Chemical Corp of which Verbatim's a subsidiary). There's a database of media and their codes over at videohelp.com.
