Hey My laptop is completly screwed and I have the option of exchanging it. MY laptop is 3.0ghz HT technology, 512 ddr sdram.

I can exchange for a Turion 64 @2.0 ghz with 2 gigs of ram, do you guys beleive that that this is a good exchange if so would I see better transcoding/encoding times?

thank you,

Dave G

The memory ipgrade is probably the best thing you can do to expedite the backup process.
I notice the processor is taking a dip but I think the increase of RAM would compensate it.

I'll allow others to voice their opinion too.

Mr. Pink is right to an extent. The upgrade from 512MB to 2GB RAM will help, but transcoding/encoding is more CPU intensive than anything else. 1 GB of RAM with a faster processor will give you MORE noticeable gains... I recently upgraded my laptop from 1 GB RAM to 2 GB with negligible encoding speed improvements. Multitasking showed much less lag, though, although it is not recommended while encoding.

The Core pcoccessor is just as if not MORE important than memory alone.
Your ruined computer with a 1gig memory upgrade (total),
Would work better than the slower processor with more memory.

In my eyes you are getting ripped,
But to each own if your short on cash and this is the
only option then it may be viable.
Otherwise i wouldnt do it.

Good luck

My point exactly, Jizmack. For encoding purposes, his old comp with the upgrade to 1 GB RAM would have been better... For all-around performance, I am really not sure which is better. I guess it doesn't really matter, though, being that the old computer is "screwed."

DaveERG ,actually ripping/transcoding/burning with a laptop will NEVER be as good as results as using a desktop PC ,laptops just arent setup very well to do it ,if you do use a laptop to rip/transcode/burn alot of dvds it will shorten the life of the laptop bigtime. and the drive wont last very long either with or without the upgrade

For transcoding CPU is more important. Although it will most likely be the same as 512 is a bit short.

The weakest link is probly the ati gpu it sucks , 54,000 rpm hdd and batt life bring a nuclear power plant if you going off the juice. The ice wifi and Bt . THIS IS A MACHINE , the pros the ram destop speed is great u can mutli tasks all u want , cons amd gets slugish at its limts.

The problem with Laptops (I find) isn't the processor or the RAM, (Both of which are guite good in modern machines) it's the drive. The spec of the machine you mention is probably capable of more than the drive can provide as laptop drives are much lower speedwise relative to a desk top.
I can't agree with the comment that a laptop can Never give as good results as a desktop. I've used both and you wouldn't notice any difference in picture quality. (apart from time taken to rip-shrink-burn)

I've always wanted to do something about my processor (it's 2.5, if I'm not mistaken) but the only upgrades available are like 400 to 500 bucks.

But like everyone said, if you upgrade the RAM, it'll help, but if your processor is too slow (like mine), you can upgrade the RAM all you want but the times will still be a little slow.
