I posted a message yesterday about not being able to change the home page from a security page that others have seem to have had. I have tried some of the suggestions in other threads and thought i might have solved the problem;however, I now have a new problem. Now the home page is msn.com and everytime I change it to the one I want (going under internet options) to save it and make it the default page, I have the same problem when I reopen IE. The page is back to msn.com. Also I sometimes have to close the browser and reopen it to go to other sites. If I type in a new URL, the progress bar appears to be taking me to the page, but it never actually does unless I close and reopen the browser. Suggestions?

Ok, I need to know if smitfraud infection is now gone...
Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Unzip it (folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop:
Open the folder SmitfraudFix and doubleclick smitfraudfix.cmd
Choose option #1 - Search by typing 1 and pressing "Enter"; a textfile opens and lists the infected files (if those exist)
Post the contents of this textfile to here.
(Some antiviruses recognises process.exe as a malware. It is not malware, it is a program that stops processes)
I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Ok, your log looks clean.
I see that some Internet Explorer settings are locked, this is propably the reason why you can't change the homepage. Or have you locked those on purpose?
This is how youcan unlock it:
Run HijackThis. Press Do a system scan only, then close all other windows, checkmark the following entries and press Fix checked
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Restart the computer.
Then try to change your homepage.
Have you set this pages to "Trusted Zone":
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.dancevision.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.roommates4you.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.taxwise.com
I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Hi, thanks. I did as you suggested to unlock the ie settings and "fix checked", then rebooted. The home page opened again as msn.com, so I changed it to the one I wanted, went under internet options (under tools, clicked "use current" which changed it to the one I wanted in the box, clicked Apply and OK, then closed and reopened IE. msn.com is still the home page. Any other solutions, suggestions, did I do something wrong? Help!! (Actually, I didn't know IE settings could be locked.)

Actually I just noticed another strange thing. If I type what I want for my home page in the address field (URL), it takes me to that page, but I am not able to go to other pages by either clicking on a Favorite or typing in the URL in the address field. I see the message that the page I typed in is opening, but it never does. However; if I close IE6 and reopen it (and the home page always opens as msn.com), I can then check on a favorite OR type in the site name in the address field and I will be taken directly to it. What else can I do?
BTW, the 3 Trusted Zone pages are legitimate sites, but I have no idea why they appear there.
Thank you for any further suggestions!!

Yes I checked those three sites but didn't know if you had set those to "trusted zone". Those can be taken of if you want.
Ok, this sounds more like a softwarebug than a hijacker.
I had an identical case just a little time ago and sorry to tell you but I couldn't solve that case.
This a farcry but you could try cleaning your registry and temporary files with CCleaner -> http://www.ccleaner.com
Then another option is to change browser to a better one.
FireFox -> http://www.mozilla.org FireFox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.
I'll try to figure out something else...

Thanks very much for your help. I tried CCleaner, but it didn't help. I still go back to msn.com even after I've changed the home page. I may try a different browser. I could try the IE7 beta and see how badly that messes things up!
If you come up with some other ideas, please let me know. I really do appreciate your help.......this is the best free help I've ever gotten. In fact I think it's better than the tech support I've actually paid for! Thanks,
Ron

I have the same problem with msn coming up every time i try to change my homepage. Also when i try to reset web settings in the ie settings dialogue. If I were you I would not install IE 7 Beta. It messed up my ability to log into forums and other websites. Not to mention other things.Your better off upgrading to FireFox.If anyone has a solution to the homepage problem I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Hi MADDADIOS.
I'm just curious, do you have ZoneAlarm installed ?
I have moved from AD, I won''t be taking new HijackThis logs from here. Reason: The AD''s Unsupportive athmosphere.

Hi
I'm not the person you addressed the question to, but I have the problem of not being able to change the home page in IE6 to anything other than msn.com and I do have Zone Alarm installed. In fact, I have it installed on my desktop and CAN change the home page in IE, but not on my laptop where I also have Zone Alarm installed. Do you have a remedy?
Thanks,
Ron

Hi,
I found a solution to the msn.com coming up as the home page evertime I started IE. Start the computer in Safe mode (hit f8 key while computer is starting up), select Safe mode. I did not start it with Safe mode with networking, so my wireless laptop could not open anything in IE6 because it was not connected to the internet. Never the less, I clicked on tools/internet options and typed in the address I wanted to be my home page exactly as it comes up: http://roanoke.com/wb/xp-index. (That's in the area of internet options that has the address of your home page). I did not click Apply, just OK and restarted the laptop in normal mode. The home page is now what I wanted it to be and I don't seem to have any problems going to other sites. I have no idea why this worked, but I'm happy to be rid of msn.com as the home page.
