So it's like this. I am finally doing the switch from VCR to DVD player for my TV. I do a lot of recording of tv programs. I want a recommendation of what is the best DVD player/recorder for my TV. I want a good and affordable one. I am not looking to spend $1000. I don't even know what the prices of one would be. I want one that plays DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R, CD+R, DL DVD-R, DL DVD+R, -RW, +RW....well everything. I want one that can record with DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM, etc and everything. Recording is pretty much the most important reasons I am getting one.

I just recently purchased a NEC3550A. So would it be better to use the NEC to record shows instead? Vying that I have a TV card, which I do, an old one that is, and I do all the proper hook ups, which I can probably do. Would it be a waste to buy a DVD Player/Recorder even if I have this NEC?

Dare I say the word "Beta"?

Anyway, my old beta vcr died and I bought a DVD/VCR combo at BestBuy to replace it. It plays the various formats and can dub from/to tape/disk. Won't do copyright items (most won't). I used it run daughter's graduation from VHS to Disk. Recording at the one or two hour speed works great to disk. The 4 hour speed was all pixeled. Mainly use it to time shift shows for easy watching, then reuse the media. Very useful when my other (main) VHS machine is already in use.

Check it out. Nice price. It has been kind to me.

The NEC3550a is a PC unit. are you looking to use a PC for recording or using a stand-alone. If the NEC, do you have the necessary equipment and software
I did use a PC but have used the stand alone for some 2yrs and wouldn't go back. [but thats me]
If stand alone, I would get one with a Hard Drive. The HDD will make it much more easy to record and edit your recordings [remove commercials or?] If this is an issue
Most would not recomend a combo unit. Can I assume that your VCR still works if needed
As to the make I have three ilo units [now disconcinued]They do what I require There are a lot of different units. Pioneer,JVC, etc. Look them over and dont always rely on a review or all the comments made.
