Is there a way around protected AAC audio files and protected MPEG-4 video files?

The easiest way around protected AAC files it to burn them to a audio disc using iTunes. As for Mpeg-4's you'll need some software. A google search should result with numerous hits for exactly want your looking for.

Really? I've never had that problem before. Is it downloaded from the iTunes Music Store? I havn't upgraded iTunes in a while but if that is a new feature I'll be certain not to.

Besides burning a CD, I remember Tunebite can record protected AAC audio and mpeg4 video to unprotected files directly.

Even if you got the files directly from your friends computer, you would still need his iTunes music store password, as those files are protected with Digital Rights Management, which means you can't listen to it without getting rid of it, or getting his password. You could try using Tunebite like dkmopq suggested [I've never tried it myself] or just burn the files from your friends computer onto an audio disc.
