One thing I have wondered is how they are going to implement sword fighting games with the Wiimote. I have no trouble understanding swinging the controller around, but what I haven't figured out is what happens when the other person parries? In real life you would be blocked and forward motion stopped. With a virtual controller there is nothing to stop your forward motion even when you are stopped on screen.

that's a really good question, actually. maybe something to pay attention to during the revamped red steel fights.
maybe lucas arts could make something really fun.
I'd imagine that perhaps the force feedback and what is shown on the screen would help, and then maybe retract the controller to the position of the sword collision and then attack again. or perhaps they make it so it is blocked, but blocked in the direction you swung so the sword more or less stays with the controller the entire time.
but yeah, that's probably something that ubisoft is working on. may be one of the reasons the sword fighting is going to be on development all the way to the wire.

I think it will be a matter of adjusting your swordplay to what is actually phyisically possible. Because you could also swing the wiimote a lot faster than you could swing a sword, the same with changing directions. So it would be a matter of controlling your swing accurately, not just using whatever the wii equivalent of button-mashing comes to be called.
Feeling stupid? I know I am!

Thats accutally got me thinking!
Take it you seen the red steel trailer then :P Looks so much fun sword fighthing...but about the parrying...
well...maybe if they block and you keep pushing you will keep applying pressure on them and then they will push back harder or you will knock them over or something?
:O

I played a samurai arcade game recently and its parry system was simple, follow your sword on screen to the enemies sword and time it well. If you don't you don't parry. When you parry, the enemy can be forced back my lunging your sword forward. as far as button mashing goes (sword swinging like a mad man), you can do it and its effective, even needed during boss fights. However, its quite impossible as you tire quickly. I'd like to see you swing your arm for a couple hours...

I think the fighting part would be easy but the combo of jumping, sword fighting, running up to get in position etc.Like ninja guiden or tenchu for example would seem to be awkward. But the devs are aware of the controllers limitations so they'll work around it.

they actually revamped the sword fighting bit in red steel, (still looks same with me) to parry you would twist the numchuck and to dodge you would 'strafe' with the numchuck. While slashing attacks are cross motions with the wiimote.
I was a bit disappointed because i was interested if you could actually parry the opponent by moving around your wiimote like an imaginary sword, forexample, you would hold the wiimote horizontal against your head to block a high slash, if they tried to stab you, you would swing your wiimote as if blocking it away from the body...
sigh, we can hope for the best

No you won't, watch some of the RedSteel gameplay videos, i think it shows that even if you do attack while the opponents are, you won't parry it.

you can both parry and dodge while being attacked in Red Steel, thus far. you can attack right after either defensive action. the swordplay is 1:1, so it mimicks your wii-mote more or less.
