Easy way to convert MKV to other formats?

Is there a simple way to do this? I've looked at online guides and frankly I have no interest in installing 20 different programs and waiting 24 hours just to convert from this unsupported format.

I have no interest installing archaic codec packs either because I use FFDShow for DivX and XviD as well as seperate decoders for DVD etc. Installing k-lite or the markustra pack would just interfere with FFDShow and my other decoders.

Please tell me why anyone uses this format?

Sorry to sound rude but this format seems completely useless when things like DivX and XviD exist.
