External DVD+R Question

Ok I am new to DVD burning in general but understand a lot of standard computer concepts. I just purchased a Phillips DVR985 external recorder. I hooked up my DV cam as well as my laptop via the firewire and burned several DVDs both ways as video DVDs etc ... now I want to burn data DVDs to backup mp3s and other formats that are taking up room on my HDs ... I figured that I could just use a software program such as Nero MyDVD and use the external recorder via firewire and it would work ... I cant seem to get the progs to locate the external burner ... before I start going crazy, I just want someone to confirm whether or not its even possible to do this sort of burn ... anyone have a similar siuation or setup ... please let me know what you use to get it to work (data burning wise) ... Thanks
