Can I make a DVD video with photo slideshows?

I am interested in creating a DVD that can display both videos of vacations as well as still digital photos taken on the trip. I am envisioning something like a normal DVD but with a menu that gives the viewer the option of proceeding to the video (where there might be chapter selection options) or to still photos, perhaps in a slideshow.

I have used TMPGEnc in the part to make DVD's from video files but I would like the ability to also display (and store) vacation pictures on the same disk.

Try using Studio 10 by Pinnacle.

I did several video/slideshows using studio 9

Programs are not free.

Did your results incorporate slideshows into the video or have them seperate? I am hoping for the latter. Sort of like a commercial DVD where you have the initial menu that gives the viewer the "play movie" option or "special features" option and when you go to the special features, it has stills of the characters with their bios, etc.

I know how how to make a slide show and video DVD. I have a variety of programs--Nero, TMPGEnc, Ulead Video Studio and Premiere Pro. I am just not certain how to combine both of them into one in a playable DVD format.

Yes my DVD's included Jpeg photos and videos imported from my camcorder on the same DVD. I even added music and dubbed a voice over.
