Hi Davey121
Your firmware is up to date but the discs you are using are only being recognized as DVD+R. Usually the manufacturer id and media code are listed also.
What brand discs your using?

Anything change since (pc wise or media) your were last able to burn?

Hi
Thanks for the reply
I am using Verbatim DVD+R (16x)- thats all the info I have on these discs - the other type I tried was another Verbatim DVD+R (8x).

The last burn I did was about a year ago with the verbatim (8x)and managed to burn the amount needed. Since then the only change to my pc was doubling my RAM to 2 gig (cant see this causing the problem) and installing System Mechanic 6 (this is not running when I burn.)

I also noticed my Nero needs updating - should I do this and would it make any difference?

Its odd that the discs are not showing the information that you noted. Do you think I may have a duff batch????

Im thinking of getting a different batch of dvds (what do you recommend) but I have burned succesfully with the verbatim 8x and now when I use these the burn is failing.

Communication failure

Heres something on this error, hope it helps.

Communication failure

Error code:

Problem:

Solution:

Old IDE controller drivers - This is the most common cause of this error message. You must have the latest drivers for your IDE controller card to prevent it. (It´s the same for SCSI cards). Go to the website of the manufacturer of your controller card and obtain the latest drivers. Such as Intel, VIA, SIS, etc.

DMA settings - You may have DMA disabled for your CD-/DVD-ROM and recorder devices. You should enable this feature. If you have old drivers (even if you have the latest in some cases), DMA may not be properly supported, even though you can enable it. You should try with DMA disabled if you still have problems having enabled it.

Enable or disable DMA:
To enable DMA in Windows 2000/XP, simply go to your 'Control Panel --> Systems --> Hardware --> Device Manager'. Double click on the 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'. Right click on the 'Primary IDE Channel', go to 'Properties --> Advanced Settings' and change ´Transfer Mode´ to 'DMA if available'. Do the same for the secondary IDE channel.
For Windows 9x and ME, go to your 'Control Panel --> System --> Device Manager --> CD-ROM' and under the devices 'Properties --> Settings' enable or disable DMA.

Driver conflicts - You may have (or had) other CD recording software installed on your system. Their drivers can cause conflicts with our software when trying to communicate to the recorder. Please remove any other recording program you may have on your system and be sure all their drivers are removed as well.

Poor IDE cables - In many cases, with the recorders supporting UDMA, you must use 80pin IDE cables. 40pin IDE cables work with the recorder, but when it comes to the actual recording process, there may be problems. You may just have an IDE cable that is in poor condition and need to replace it, too. Or try a different connector on that IDE cable as the connector could be the cause.

CSEL - If your devices are jumpered with CSEL, your controller could be having trouble with this setting. It's best to change it, so that you have your devices jumpered as master or slave. Refer to the manual on your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and recorder devices for how to do this.

Hi Gwendolin
Most of what u put I have no idea about
The DMA thing is enabled on both channels - I will try the burn again with these both disabled.
as for the other things mentioned - where do I find the IDE controller card so i can see if needs updating - is this located where the DMA things is. (sorry to sound like a noob)
I have no other recording software on my pc and I dont think I ever did - its been Nero all the way.
Is it worth updating Nero to the latest version???

bit annoyed that I burned 1 disc of this new batch and the rest just fail.

Thanks for the reply

Definately do not upgrade past 7.0.8.2, available here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?845

but unless you want to use the Demo you will have to pay for it.

To be honest with you, a lot of those dont make sense to me either, I am not that technical minded.

Don't disable DMA - leave that on.

I don't think upgrading to Nero 7 will solve this.

As gwen post pointed out your error can be caused by several things.
Your tried 2 different speeds of media and your drive still can't recognize the disc fully even with up to date firmware.
So it may not be functioning properly.

Start with uninstalling the ide channel and the drive itself. This guide is for turning DMA back on but will show you how to uninstall both and let windows reinstall.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Then run a registry cleaner to clear any conlicts and clean up the registry. Here's a good free one:
http://ccleaner.com

Try those 1st and see if they make a diff.

If that doesn't work to rule out more: you should check the ide & power connections inside the case and make sure they are secure. You may even want to try and switch power connectors and/or ide connections.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply both

I followed the instructions about uninstalling the ide channels and also the dvd buner - restarted the pc and it all installed again.

I then did about 15 burns and 8 of them worked at 8x and one at 6x (some failed at 4x still) (using the verbatim 16x dvd+)

Still getting the communicatiin failure.

Anyway I managed to burn the amount needed but I will still go ahead and check the connections to make sure nothing is loose etc.

so thanks for all the help, much appreciated and I will make sure I post when I run into trouble again : )

Its good when things go right but such a pain when they don't.
