I have just recently installed a new Plextor 740a dvd burner and everytime I try to burn my project to a DVD+RW disc (tried Sony and TDK brands), an error message will pop up saying "please insert writable media", I have even done a full erase on Nero before trying to burn the project to the re-writable media. I will burn on write-once media just fine but keeps spitting the RW's back out.
I want to believe that there is a configuration setting that I can adjust to fix this problem. If anyone else has encountered this problem, please advise on the proper way to fix the issue.
i would suggest trying +r or -r media to narrow it down, after that i would check to see if there are any firmware updates u need. plextor is a pretty reputable burner( probably the best ), but even the best make a few lemmons.
a dvdrw need to be formated for data or some projects, for writing a movie it should over write,i use roxio to format the dvdrw's..i have used a dvdrw for over a couple hundred times..as for testing the rip and burn..then i do a copy to copy on the fly..using roxio or Nero..
for erase i find roxio does a better job then Nero..
nero and roxio are not on the same computer
as there is a conflict if both are installed on the same xp-computer..
Gemename, I have tried bothe + and - R formats without succuess.
I have also updated the firmware to the most current version.
This is the second unit that I have had issues with so far.
I will try formating the disc as Ireland suggested to see how that works and reply back.
Thank you both for your helpfull assistance.
I`ve had this problem too: "Please insert writeable media" with DVD+RW. It`s very frustrating knowing the disc has never been used, so you try another but it`s the same story.
I can`t be sure exactly what I did now, but I probably reinstalled it - probably updating at the same time. At present I`m using Nero v6.6.0.18.
I do remember though, trying to locate the Nero Directory to erase before reinstalling - is recommended, but not much fun to find if you`re a beginner like me so
I went to RegCleaner(v4.3) and erased a few unnecessaries under "Ahead" in the registry.
I guess that must have done it `cos I haven`t had any problems to date with rewrites - touch wood.
I always use a rewrite first to see how my project works before burning, as it saves a lot on disc costs.
Hope this helps.

In this case what you actually have is a rebadged (and over priced, though no longer available) Benq1640, which happens to be a very good burner. Unfortunely the Plex firmware negates many of the Benq's advanced functions, and Benq releases firmware on a more regular basis. That said fire up Nero InfoTool and see how things look.
Check 'Drive', 'Configuration', looking for proper DMA etc., and 'ASPI' to see if it says it's working properly.

explain that please! don't they clash? ;-)
I use DVDDecrypter or DVDInfo Pro to erase RW disks. works better than Nero! that's for sure. And I do a copy of a copy on the fly using Nero or Blindwrite6.
