you will not have any problem with the PCI one, even for gaming, but the second one is obviously more powerful and you can have it even for the future generations of games which requires more video memory. I would buy the second one.

P4 R 2.8 GH, two processors
512 Mb RAM
160 GB HDD
256 MB ATI

NO! The X800GTO is worlds faster than the X1600Pro! Trust me on this. Now the X1600XT is a different story but here you wan't the X800GTO.

More core horsepower, 256-bit memory, and better driver support.

Because of bad driver support the X1600Pro freaks out with some games still. When good ones finally do come out it will be equal to an X700Pro.

x800gto is better than x1600pro but one is PCI express and one is AGP. What kind of slot do you have? I personaly prefer nvidia to ati.

Both are actually in PCIe and AGP. I own the PCIe X800GTO. I already also have an X850XT. So if luke1991 needs to make the change to fit his mobo he's good.

I am well aware of the weaknesses of the X1600Pro but I hear the XT is a different beast.

Right now, for the price, ATi is the best you can get. Not to mention the X1900XTX Crossfire is more powerful than the 7900GTX SLI by about 5%. But I respect your attraction to Nvidia over ATi.
