I haven't been keeping up with the newer technology lately. I need to know what benefits I will have if I switch to DL DVD+R's. Some of my questions are will I be able to burn a 7gb movie with no compression? I use dvdshrink now, and while I can't complain about the quality of the picture it still sucks when watching on a 42" plasma and seeing imperfections.
Another thing I was wondering is the exact size of a DL and is it one sided? Do you have to flip it over to get to the sides? Kinda like the DVD's that have fullscreen on one side and widescreen on the other.
I guess what I am really wondering is can I treat it like a 8gb DVD+R?
I apologize if these are just repeat questions but I couldn't find any info on the forums. Thanks.
yes u can back up 1 to 1 movie with no compression.
and it is only one side.
the two sides disc is a flipper, each side only 4.7 gb
DL disc and flipper are not the same.
a DL disk is on one side...... 8.5Gigs...... just use DVDDecrypter or DVDFab Decrypter and burn with your favorite burning program. I use CopyToDVD or Nero for easy 1:1 copies. It's the simplest way to do but for the price..... I'm still burning on a DVD-5 (single sided, 4.7G disk) because of price.......... I'm waiting for the DLs to come wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy down in price before I go ahead and buy. So are many members of Afterdawn waiting for price breaks. Sooooooo keep on learning how to burn with the DVD-5s and when HD-DVD/Blue-Rey get going maybe we can catch a break on those DLs! As far as I'm concerned I don't like all the other crap that's on the DVD... I just like the movie only..... get down to the meat and potato of the DVD! So to me it's not too bad at all with my HD 52" tv! I get perfect quality and most of my DVDs have no compression to them....... Like I said MOST. You know there are some movies that need compression so I use DVDRebuilder Pro with CCE/ProCoder2 for great quality results. Most of my DVDs now are done by AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 because the compression is 80% quality or better! So I don't see any problems with my DVDs viewing on the 52" HDTV. I guess I'm sooooooooo lucky. :-D!
I think this was discussed in other threads, but if I am reading this right it means that the movie was actually compressed 20%. IOW, that 100% quality now becomes 80% quality, and this only becomes a factor if compression is down around 60% or so and you are watching it on large screen TV's. Is this correct?
well....... I don't put a number on compression values....... I just follow 80% quality rating as it is a good rule for me and what I do. Some go as far as 60% compression. I don't. It's a matter of taste and I just keep thinking about my dream large plazma or LCD tv that I want down the road...... will my DVDs look good on those tvs? Keep the quality high...... that's all I try to do.
Hey, thanks for the info! I will probably buy a few DL Dvds then for my movies that I would rather not sacrafice quality, then fully switch later once price drops on DL's. Thanks again.
The actual size of a DL dvd is about 7.96 gb instead of 8.5 gb as advertised. Similiar to the actual size of a SL dvd being about 4.38 gb instead of the advertised 4.7 gb. As you can see, you can't quit fit 2 complete SL dvd's on one DL dvd without some compression. Close but not quit. I rarely use DL media yet do to the outstanding results achieved with dvd rb/procoder2. With this outstanding program combo, I regularly compress 7+ gb folders to fit on a SL (DVD5) and the video quality is still great on my 52" HDTV. I could never say that with any transcoding app such as DVD Shrink, clonedvd2, or Nero recode2.
