Hi there,

In a few weeks I am moving into a new house which is unfurnished and have decided its a great excuse to buy a HDTV. However I have heard some unsettling rumours which are holding me back from splurging the cash.

I have been told that copied HD-DVD/BluRay/Normal DVD's wont be able to play on these TV's due to some funky piece of copy protection - Ive got a few of my DVD's backed up and the originals are scratched so I want a piece of equipment on which i can still watch these films.

I have also heard some naff things about HDMI, more to the point the amount of connectors a TV has on it. Assuming everything will soon come through HDMI then with my DVD player, Digi Box and console am i going to need to shell out a cack load of money to buy some swtiching box?

Id be really grateful if someone could let me know if either these rumours are true/false/or nothing to worry about in the long run.

Congratulations on your decision to move to HDTV.

Backups of standard DVD's should display normally on HDTV's. If you have a Progressive scan DVD player these should display at 480p. If you have an upconverting DVD player these should display as 720p or 1080i according to your choice using HDMI. Most upconverting DVD players will not display 720p or 1080i thru component.

We still have a way to go before HD-DVD's and BluRay discs can be backed up.

HDMI switchers don't have to be expensive. This unit from monoprice has had pretty good feedback for less than $150:

@rflook...if you get an HD cable box, read the instructions carefully; people often don't realize that the cable box will have menu options as to how the signal is delivered to the TV and they can't figure out why the picture isn't good, or too small or whatever.
