AVI playback skipping and freezing intermittently

This query is probably similar to others, but I cannot seem to find a solution. Now if I am out of order here, asking this question, please excuse me, I have already been turfed off another forum for asking this exact question, damned if I know why. Ok here we go. I have an AVI of a movie I want to burn to DVD. I try playing the AVI through windows media player and it continually freezes for a second or so and then catches up to where it should be, at the same time the audio goes out of synch. This happens at least 4-5 times a minute and makes it unwatchable. I cant burn this the way it is as I will just be producing a coaster. The AVI is the result of a DVD rip and came in the form of 8 RAR files, and I think it is a DivX rip, if that makes sense. Any ideas etc much appreciated.
