converting Divx/Xvid in PAL

Hi...this may be user error but I have checked and double checked and I do not see where I am going wrong.

When I try to convert Divx/Xvid file, using one of the many very useful guides provided on the site, that AVICodec tells me is in PAL format, all I get is a blank black screen and no audio, even when encoding with TMPGEnc, the analyse window is blank but goes through the process of encoding anyway.

Any ideas?
