Nero burning speed problems

I'm using Nero 7 Ultra Edition to burn DVD -Rs using a Pioneer DVD RW DVR-109 v.1.17. I used to use Maxell 8X discs and experienced no problems with burning speed. Then one day I noticed the burn speed was very slow (still using Maxell DVD -R), what used to take 13 minutes to burn a data DVD at 4X speed took 38 minutes to burn. I then changed to Fujifilm DVD -R 16X, and it still took 38 minutes to burn. At this point, I also noticed that Nero was not giving me the option to change the burn speed, they were all greyed out. I then went back to the Maxell DVD -R 8X disc and the burn speed options in Nero were now available to me from 4X up to 16X. (First, why would it show me 16X available when the disc is only capable of 8X?) So I chose the 8X speed option and it still took 38 minutes to burn. No matter what speed I choose it still take 38 minutes to burn. At the 8X speed option the DVD drive sounds like it is spinning at a higher RPM but like I said it still took 38 minutes to burn.
I ran the Drive Speed Tool in Nero with the Maxell 8X DVD -R and it told me that the average burn speed was 1.51. Why is this?
I've also tried to get the latest updates for Nero 7 but when I go use Nero ProductSetup, I get this message "MSI starter has encountered a problem and needs to close..."
Nero seems to have slowed down on everything, can anyone tell me what may have happened here, and what I can do to get Nero back to performing properly?

Post your last Nero log this can give us some info that cen be helpful.
They are located here: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory
Just be sure to edit out your serial # - usually begin w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.
Copy and paste what in the last log - the logs are separated by something similar to this:

first and foremost, firmware is WAY outdated, might be an issue with your new 16x rated discs, your drive does not recognize them PROPERLY~ :)

1.58 is the newest version (i'm currently using 8.58 buffalo for my dvr-109, but 1.58 is stable~)
good chance that due to a few errors that your drive may have fallen back into PIO mode, DMA needs to be on..check here for reference:

hiya binkie7,
when i come across posts with one of the drives i CURRENTLY use, i try to offer SOME little assistance because of experience with the drive~ :) unless the burners on are on their "last leg," it helps to have EXPERIENCE with the drive in question before determining that it's a "nero version" problem~ LOL :)
obviously a Nero log as you requested would reveal the DETAILS of where the poster is having speed problems, but sometimes (more often than not) it comes down to media choice and appropriate firmware to handle said media and DMA being on naturally "speeds up" the process~ :)
you are much more knowledeable than i am w/ Nero and all it's diff. applications, but when it comes down to firmware and hardware and MEDIA, i would like to think i can offer even a LITTLE bit of advice that could help the user along with YOUR suggestions on the Nero aspect of it~ :)

Nah DocTY I think you hit the nail on the head with this one - firmware and dma mode.
@deckertoo
Follow Kivory's suggestions on firmware & DMA. In device manager look at your mode under 'current transfer mode' too. Make sure dma is listed there.
Let us know how this goes!

I went to try and update the firmware as suggested and received the following message after I ran UPGR109.exe -- "Target is not found"
At this point I thought I better send you my latest Nero log, before I do anything else.

First let's get that Pioneer back in DMA mode - you are in the sloooow PIO mode. This is part of your problem - more hardware related than Nero version.

Once you get DMA back on try the firmware update again. The update should help your drive recognize & give the burn speeds on the Fuji media.
Did you install the Pioneer or did it come w/ the pc?
Burning at 12x in this log took 13 mins - a bit long for 12x. Getting the drive back in DMA mode should help this.
For these Maxell's I would burn at the rated speed of 8x instead of overburning at 12x.

hehe, juss checking back w/ this thread myself...
as to the firmware upgrade for the Pioneer drive, i am GUESSING that after downloading the new firmware, you are given a choice to "pick which burner" you want to update, is there a chance you might have accidentally chosen your Liteon drive for the update? so therefore it gave you the "target not found" error? make sure your Pioneer dvr-109 drive is highlighted and is the "chosen" drive to update the firmware on... :)
as binkie7 suggested, i would get your drive back to DMA mode and then try the firmware update again, i've flashed my own Pioneer drive so many times already that it's prolly sick and tired of getting flashed, but using OFFICIAL pioneer firmware (as i've used it in the past) it was a quick and painless process with their built-in flasher in the *.exe file you downloaded~ :)
in the RARE cases where people have issues updating firmware, SOMETIMES it helps to update in "increments"..by this i mean, sometimes if you are going from a very old firmware to that of the very newest one and there are like 10 revisions in between, it's a good idea to get the drive used to the process and go up like 2-3 revisions and flash that first, then reboot...and then try the newer update after the 1st flash was successful~ :) since you are using 1.17 right now, it's very much outdated, perhaps try going in smaller steps to possibly 1.40/1.50 then if that is successful, go to 1.57 and then to 1.58 if need be~ :) i was using the 1.57 firmware for the LONGEST time and quite frankly that particular revision is the most "stable" in my own opinion, it has a lot to offer in terms of newer MID tables and write strategies, give that a go...all the available firmwares can be found right here:

you are using some very good media, Hitachi made Maxells in Japan, even with the 1.57 firmware for the pioneer dvr-109, i've had excellent results burning on those particular Maxells as it's fully supported in the firwmare tables (on my particular MXLRG03, some were even better than my TYG02/TYG03 taiyo yudens...seriously) :)
as binkie mentioned, you really shouldn't "overburn" ur media (ie. faster than the rated speed of disc)...the dvr-109 is notorious for having those faster writing capabilities...i can burn my TYs @16x if i wanted to, but i see no advantage of doing so...i keep my burns @8x for MY best results~ :)
as to ur new Fuji 16x rated DVD-R, firmware update is vitally important for you to be able to burn those properly, i can almost guarantee you that for the 1.17 revision u are using now, the 16x media is NOT supported...hence the reason u are getting such long burning times...

Thanks for your reply.
I changed the DMA as suggested.
Then went and tried to upgrade the firmware to v1.58 and I received the same error message "Target is not found". When I go and run UPGR109.exe I'm not asked what burner to update. I'm not asked anything at all. When I downloaded this file I saved it to C:/DVR109/FW158EU. Then double clicked on UPGR109.exe Is this okay? Could this be my problem?
I then went and tried to update the firmware to v1.40 and received the same error message -- and again I was not asked what burner to update.
Any help will be appreciated.

I also have a Pioneer (DVR-A08) but Nero and device manager report is as a DVR-108. I can not flash w/ the DVR-108 firmware - only the A08 works.
May be the case here.
If you still have the box check for the model # on there.

that's exactly how it's supposed to be done, you simply double click on the *.exe file after the download...
per chance was your computer built by a company (ie. Dell/Gateway/etc.) or did you install the drive yourself? did you buy an OEM Pioneer dvr-109 or did you get the A09XL model or the dvr-109XLA model?
as binkie suggested, there seems to be a conflict with the OEM dvr-109 model firmware that i linked ya to, mine happens to be an OEM dvr-109, so for the firmware it's listed as the "bk" version...as she mentioned with her own A08, it's not possible without cross-flashing to put the official 108 firmware onto an A08 model, same is true for the 109 and the A09 (it CAN be done, but involves cross-flashing or omnipatching, depending on whatever the user chooses to do) :)
anyways, try this one, it's the same one that binkie linked ya to but specific for the A09/109XLA/109AXL :

see if that one works...let us know how it turns out, firmwares can be a bit tricky if you've never done the flashing procedure before, but after you flash it for the first time, the rest is a piece of cake for future updates~ :)

Binkie7 and Kivory666, I can't thank you enough for sticking with this problem.
I went to the new link and downloaded the firmware file for A09/109XLA/109AXL. I ran it but I'm sorry to say that I received the same message "Target not found".
The desktop is made by Medion and was purchased from an electronics store (Future Shop) and came with all the hardware installed. I know its a Dual Layer DVD +/-RW drive. The processor is an Intel Pentium D 820.
I've also just sent an email to Medion Support regarding this firmware problem but I won't hear back from them for 3 days. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say.
In the meantime, if you can think of anything else that I can try I'd appreciate it.

That firmware file worked. I just did a burn with a Fujifilm DVD and Nero recognized all possible write speeds.

you are FAR from "slacking" in any sense of the word, i juss figured i would put my countless flashes with my Pioneer dvr-109 to good use for a change and get someone with the drive up and running again~
btw, i have used ALL the various firmwares for the 109 at some point or another; official pioneer, buffalo, medion, even some obscure patched/cross-flashed stuff that wasn't ever meant to go on a pioneer. LOL
