Hi all, I have recently purchased an xbox 360 and was looking forward to having the shiny white box sitting under my new HD tv. When setting up the console I was happy to see what looked like some high quality cables and general good build quality. I was however stunned by the whopping great big power supply. I mean it?s huge!!! What were they thinking!!! Not that it?s a real problem other than the initial shock of the thing.
Anyway on to my only gripe so far??..
The problem I have is the noise of the thing. Even when idile it?s loud. I would expect this to increase slightly when the CD is spinning but it?s way more than expected. Most important to me is the noise level when idile (i.e. can you hear it when your watching listening to music or watching a DVD while the box is on). It sounds as if the fans are constantly (but only slightly) changing speed and are making what can only be described as a whine when spinning. What can I do to solve this? Should I take it back? Has anyone else got this problem?
The only thing I can think of to resolve the problem is to lock it away in a cupboard and than MS that they made RF controllers!

Ok after some investigation on the web it sounds like noise levels vary from laptop to aircraft levels. Think I will press MS a bit harder it they dont offer me a solution.

This might be stupid to say, lol. But my 360 is also very loud, and the way i look at it is that its similar to when you put a CD/DVD in your computer and install something (i guess a game would be a good example) and it gets alot louder while installing the game becuse the disc is spinning alot. The way I see it, its similar with the 360 and the reason its louder than the original xbox or ps2 is becuase the games are in HD and have so much more detail so therefore the disc have to spin faster and read faster so they can get more information off of the disc in the same or a less amount of time, than with the other consoles. Actually I don't know for sure if thats the reason at all or not, it was just a guess lol. But Ido think they could have worked a little harder and made it atleast a little quieter.

Yes the 360's can be quite loud and annoying. I usually just crank up the volume so I don't hear it. Plus the Toshiba models are way louder then the Hitachi's. Its quite a difference.

I can see why you would think more power would automatially mean more noise but unfortunatly its a bit more complicated than that. Basically its bad/poor design!
I'm not so bothered about the DVD drive noise. It's the idile noise that bothers me the most. I would like to leave the 360 on overnight in my room to download content but its just too loud! Arg.
It will be interesting to see what the PS3 noise levels are like.

Yea I would leave mine on all night also, but as you said its too loud, but a bigger concern for me is that, I dont know about about everyone elses but, my 360 gets really hot when its only idle. I'm not really worried about it catching on fire or anything like that but the way I see it the more its turned on and running hot the shorter the lifespan, and the more posibility of something going wrong. Becides leaving it on for downloads, another thing I have left it on for is DVDs, usually I leave my DVD player on all night becuse I always watch a movie before I go to sleep and I fall asleep during the movie, leaving the player on all night. So recently my DVD player quit on me and I have been using my 360 to play DVDs, I know I shouldnt do that but its temorary until I can get a new DVD player. I have only left my 360 on all night playing a DVD for one night, after that I figured i shouldnt do it so I have just been watching TV. Do you guys think its ok to leave it on all night playing a DVD or not?

thats not a good idea man. The disc is spinning in there (at low speeds) but its still worse than just turing off!

mine actually does not make that much noize...make sure the power unit is not laying say for instance on your mat, that will cause bad ventiltaion and teh fans will spin faster and make more noize and your 360 will heat up more...

Mine sets on a stand with my ps2 sepperate from the rest of my equipment, both standing up, so I dont think mine could get much cooler unless I get a Pelican fan stand.
