when i use alchol to burn it to a cd-r i get as far as the playstation logo and just sits there never gets to the game

Open up the mds file in IsoBuster, and convert it to bin/cue, then burn with Nero .

it shouldn't matter whether you convert them or not, they are just image files so no matter what format they are in, burning them with ImgBurn will give you the same results. If the image file is corrupted in the first place, converting isn't going to help
